Summary

A thrilling lesbian mystery about trying to right a past wrong...despite the consequences.

Detective Constable Kate Wolfe is sent to a Cheshire backwater after falling foul of a disciplinary hearing in London. But before she even has a chance to settle in, Kate finds herself in a situation from which there's no coming back. She's reported as a troublemaker to her new boss, Detective Chief Inspector Helen Taylor, a no-nonsense veteran who once had an esteemed, high-profile career.

The pair investigates a spate of arson attacks, a dead body found in a burnt-out building, and a missing architect while fighting their growing attraction for each other. The discovery of a dumped vehicle in a quarry lake sparks a series of events that will change their lives forever.

Contains mature themes.

I struggled to finish this one.

Payback by Charlotte Mills is a sapphic police mystery book.
Some pages felt repetitive, mentioning Kate was only in the town for a short period, time and time again.

The cases the women worked on seemed to be the most interesting part of the book. I felt that the characters didn’t have much substance to their relationship besides both enjoying sex. Helen and Kate just worked together on a case; they didn’t discuss their personal lives, so it was hard to believe they were “falling in love.”

It made me feel uncomfortable when Helen was saying “no” to sex because she didn’t want to be late for work, but they had sex anyway. Later, it was only addressed playfully before returning to the case. At this point in the book, Kate had mentioned a ‘friend’ being sexually assaulted. I would have thought this kind of behaviour wouldn’t occur, especially as more is disclosed later on.

The last few chapters revealed the real reason Kate moved to Cheshire. Kate’s background was quite a revelation; I didn’t see any of this coming. Unfortunately, I found the outcome a little unconvincing.

I’ve given the book 3/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟
