About this listen

A lyrical debut novel from a musician and artist renowned for her sharp sexual and political imagery

Jo is in a strange new country for university and having a more peculiar time than most. In a house with no walls, shared with a woman who has no boundaries, she finds her strange home coming to life in unimaginable ways. Jo's sensitivity and all her senses become increasingly heightened and fraught, as the lines between bodies and plants, dreaming and wakefulness, blur and mesh.

This debut novel from critically acclaimed artist and musician Jenny Hval presents a heady and hyper-sensual portrayal of sexual awakening and queer desire.

An interesting listen

An interesting listen. I actually didn't read the description of this audio book before listening so had no clue what to expect. It was a good listen. The book has been written well. There are a few rather strange themes mentioned throughout the book which took me by surprise.

Honestly WTF is this

Save yourself and your credit by not listening to this. It’s nothing-it’s strange incidents during a year abroad living in a strange warehouse, intimations some sort of sapphic relationship with too much urine. Not worth anyone’s time

so much urine

I think it could have been really interesting and the imagery in some places is definitely poetic but the MC is obsessed with urine. Hearing people pee, seeing others pee/themselves and with mixing hers with others. It happens in most chapters to some degree. It's not that it's gross, but more that it never seems to add to the narrative or situation, it stops you in your tracks and takes you out of the story very suddenly. Comes across more like a self insert kink rather than something tangible and meaningful.
