Summary

The senior pupils of St Peter's High School are on retreat to a secluded outdoor activity centre, coming to terms with the murder of a fellow pupil through the means you would expect: counselling, contemplation, candid discussion and even prayer...not to mention booze, drugs, clandestine liaisons and as much partying as they can get away with.

Not so far away, the commanders of a top-secret military experiment, long-since spiralled out of control, fear they may have literally unleashed the forces of Hell. Two very different worlds are on a collision course, and will clash in an earthly battle between science and the supernatural, philosophy and faith, civilisation and savagery. The bookies are offering evens.

DEMONS, NOT JUST NEDS ON BUCKFAST!

I love Brookmyre books, I especially love the Glasgow vernacular, it reminds me of home. The way he captures childhood is spot on (as in his, 'A Tale Etched in...'), and I had to laugh at the crude depiction of my former school in a cheeky aside!

5th/6th Years from a Glasgow Catholic school are on a retreat to cope with the death of a fellow classmate; meanwhile scary beasties appear to be running amok in an MOD site just up the road, despite the best efforts of the military and the Vatican!

Oh Yes!... Brookmyre does Sci-Fi Horror

No one does school days like Brookmyre and here he delves into the angst and anxieties of teenage adolescence with great insight and humour. Couple this with a portal to hell (pre-empting Stranger Things) and you have a brilliantly entertaining listen which is intensely exciting once it all kicks off.

Disappointing

I really wanted to enjoy this, but it’s boring! I can hardly believe that statement, so it’s going back.

How to justify you atheism when Hell is on earth?

A brilliant story as Usual by Brookmyre mixing cutting satire with a horror show invasion of Hell onto earth, but as usual a thought provoking religious overtone. I have only just discovered Chris/Christopher Brookmyre (yes he publishes under both names so make sure you check all his books) via James Nesbitt who was the lead in the TV version of "Quite Ugly one Morning". Well wriiten and very humourous.

Hugely Entertaining

Brookmyre's novels are always intelligent and entertaining, with humour and a thrill (or several) masking an underbelly of smart observations and unlikely insights. Kenny Blyth's superb turn as narrator is the perfectly compliment, and while you may need a certain suspension of disbelief, theirs is an outstanding combination.

Slow start but worth sticking with

As usual Chris Brookmeyer's narrative is excellent. The power of faith and it's potentially devastating effects are explored here as well as the divisive / unifying impact of organised religion and the faith / science face off. All wrapped up with a bunch of irreverent Glaswegian teens.. Brilliant. I loved it..

Brilliant and engaging story.

Pure Brookmyer class set loosely around old retro gaming stories. Can't end it there Chris. Screaming out for Pamdemonium II.

Hard going

I love Mr Brookmyre's books, but this one didn't really work for me. The reading was a bit stumbly. I was interested in the issues and debates but alot of dialogues sounded more like lectures and the pace segued uncomfortably between the (very gruesome) action and the religious and scientific discussion. I learnt alot, but it seemed long and hard work.

Brilliant Brookmyre.

A wonderful reading of this fabulous book, as always with Christopher Brookmyre not a book for the squeemish. I bought this book when it was first released but it is great to hear it read in the correct tongue as I can't quite get the tone right in my head.

Great fun!

What made the experience of listening to Pandaemonium the most enjoyable?

I absoulutly loved this book, it was fun, fast paced and we'll told. What's better than a bunch of wayward teens coming together to overcome hell itself. So many rich characters to follow. I highly recommend this book for a bit of fun and escapism. Very well narrated. It had me enthralled from start to finish.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I have listens to this book numerous times and more than once in an entire sitting.
