Summary

A weight-losing recipe sends a portly Victorian housemaid literally sky-high. Mrs Next-Door, the queen of copycats, drives her patient neighbour mad with rage; the tragic tale of the ghost of Fairacre; the touch-and-go romance of Elsie Parker.

In Over the Gate, Miss Read, the village schoolmistress, continues to remember odd incidents and excellent stories and to retell them with characteristic grace and compassion.

Narrator sublime!

Gwen Watford is THE voice of Miss Read. No other narrator can match her. Liquid honey voice oozing sympathetic understanding of human frailty in the tale of the daily toil of a dedicated teacher, observing humanity with her gentle, wry humour perfectly paced and pitched for maximum enjoyment. Wonderful!

Lovely collection of shorter stories from Fairacre. Didn’t like the narrator.

Not the usual Fairacre book that I’ve read up to now, this is more of a collection of short stories from Fairacre centering around, and told by, Miss Read. It was very enjoyable, but I do prefer the long stories that I can get pulled into for longer periods of time.

The narrator sounded too upper class, which for me made the stories harder to follow, and didn’t seem a good fit for the book.

Good, but not the best of Miss Read

I enjoyed the book, and I used it to lull me to sleep - which probably tells you more about it than my review! It’s a collection of short stories, essentially, which I don’t particularly enjoy, but the performance was good.

Why oh why?

Please please re-number this book! Yes it’s good, but totally ruined by knowing everything that comes ahead. Surely most people read a series in order and this is pre-Holy Island, so should be 0 not 11!! Come on Audible, get into gear!!

Great writer and great narrator

Miss Read was a wonderful writer and I very much enjoyed these short stories. It's wonderful to dive back in time with these stories which are so evocative. The narrator is excellent, she does all the different accents and voices, male and female, very convincingly, and you can hear every word clear as a bell.

Good story

Gwen Watford is a marvellous narrator of the Miss Read books as she brings the books to life.

Another lovely read

Once again a beautiful journey through the eyes of the residents of fairacre … nice easy listening especially on a Sunday afternoon. Brings a kind of peacefulness to the soul.
