Summary

In the year of our Lord 1894, I became an outlaw.

Ada loves her broad-shouldered, bashful husband and her job as a midwife. But her luck is running out. It is a woman's duty to have a child, to replace those lost in the Great Flu. Unable to get pregnant, Ada must flee from a town where barren women are hanged as witches.

When Ada joins the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of outlaws planning to create a haven for women outcast from society, she must decide if she's willing to risk her life for the possibility of a new kind of future for them all.

Great feminist twist on a western

Enjoyable, but left me with too many unanswered questions. Should've delved deeper into the storyline

Narrator was awful

I couldn’t even get past the first hour of this novel. The narrator made everyone sound the same, so confusing. Her reading just didn’t draw me into this book.

Great story, dreadful reader

I would have enjoyed listening to this intelligent novel had it not been for the terrible reader. Such a forced ponderous voice that thoroughly irritates from the start. I’d recommend reading it instead as it is well worth it

A compelling story

A humanising painful, hopeful story about what gender-oppressed people can achieve when they embrace society's rejection (but not the rationale of it). Slow to start, but then you're racing.

I want to read it…

Not very often I can’t listen to an audiobook, but the decision to use this narration is a bad one. I got to chapter 4 and I can’t listen anymore. I don’t understand, the voice can’t be her real voice. There’s giving the character some grit and then there’s this. Shame cause the story is good.

The Wild West reimagined

Cynthia Farrell does a good job of telling this intriguing tale of Ava and the Hole in the Wall gang.
A sensitive and creative take on the old legendary story- but relevant in so many ways to present times. Definitely recommend a listen
