Summary
From the author of Becoming Ted and The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle, an 'utterly joyful' audiobook about love, friendship and identity.
Two men. Twenty years of friendship. One love.
2002
Danny arrives at Manchester University determined not to hide from the world any longer. This is the year his life will begin.
He locks eyes with a handsome stranger across the hall at the Fresher's Fair. It starts with a wink and soon Danny and Guy are best friends.
2022
Now, both single for the first time in years, Danny and Guy return to the confetti-covered streets of the Gay Village for Manchester Pride.
After years of shared adventures and lost dreams, Danny finally plans to share the secret he has been keeping for two decades. He has always been in love with Guy.
Could this weekend be the end of a twenty-year friendship...or the start of something new and even more beautiful?

Beautifully written
I absolutely adored this book. The writing is sublime and I really grew to love the characters. It had everything from high camp, drama, heartache and of course love. Not my usual choice but I’m a total convert and will read everything that Matt creates from now on. I really didn’t want this one to end.

More than a will-they-won’t-they
This was lovely, at first glance it’s a Queer as Folk meets One Day-esque romcom and it does deliver in those regards, but there’s more heart, serious themes and analysis of queer love beneath that.

The importance of boundaries and communication
Heart felt reality. The differences in characters and the need for communication. The importance of loyalty In Friendships. Loved the story line and both the main characters .

Great characters
I’ve enjoyed all of Matt Cain’s books. His great talent is to create very sympathetic characters and in this book I loved both Danny and Guy and was sad when their story came to an end. The narration was also excellent. My only reservation is that Matt can become a bit too preachy. He should trust his readers/listeners to reach their own conclusions.

One more Matt Cain book
I really enjoyed Matt Cain’s earlier two novels and was excited about the prospect of a third. However, when the most interesting and memorable thing about Ken Doll Guy, one of the protagonists, was his teenage acne, my spirits flagged. The writer loves the collision of two time zones as a device, but maybe it’s time to try another technique. I really liked the elevation of a camp man, Danny to that of hero and an exploration of many ‘straight acting’ gay men’s dismissive ridicule of men like Danny gave the book a back bone and a dignity. The nod to 1950s A Taste of Honey, which does the opposite with a camp character, was thought provoking. Overall though the book felt like a rough draft and a not very interesting diary. If I had not had the book read to me, I don’t think i would have made it to the end.

Soporific narration underwhelms story
Bought this because I enjoyed 'The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle' so much. Unfortunately I found the narration here so flat and monotone that the story and characters simply didn't come to life for me at all.
