About this listen

Bloomsbury presents One Garden Against the World written and read by Kate Bradbury.

'If you ever doubted that you can help change the world, READ THIS BOOK.' CAROLINE LUCAS
'The greatest existential crisis we face distilled into the crucible of a tiny piece of paradise.' CHRIS PACKHAM

Five years after writing her first nature memoir, The Bumblebee Flies Anyway, Kate Bradbury has a new garden.

It’s busy: home to all sorts of wildlife, from red mason bees and bumblebees to house sparrows, hedgehogs and dragonflies. It seems the entire frog population of Brighton and Hove breeds in her small pond each spring, and now there are toads here, too. On summer evenings, Kate watches bats flit above her and for a moment, everything seems alright with the world.

But she knows habitat loss remains a huge issue in gardens, the wider countryside and worldwide, and there’s another, far bigger threat: climate change. Temperature increases are starting to bite, and she worries about what that will mean for our wildlife.

In her uplifting new book, Kate writes passionately about how her climate-change anxiety pushes her to look for positive ways to keep going in a changing world. As in her first memoir, she invites you into her life, sharing stories of her mum’s ongoing recovery and her adventures with her new rescue dog, Tosca.

One Garden Against the World is a call to action for all of us – gardeners, communities and individuals – to do more for wildlife and more for the climate. Climate change and biodiversity loss go hand in hand, but if we work together, it’s never too late to make a difference.

Critic reviews

'Heartfelt and impassioned… an invitation to a deeper relationship with the world around us, and proof of what might be achieved if we became true custodians of our nearby nature.' (Melissa Harrison, author of All Among the Barley)

'This beautiful book is both thoughtful meditation and practical guide. Through Kate’s journey of trial and error and her highs and lows, we learn how every one of us can transform whatever space we have, no matter how small, into an oasis for wildlife and a positive force for the planet. This book is a cure for eco-anxiety and a testament to the power of community. It’s an inspiring, empowering call to arms and a comforting companion on the road to a better world.' (Jasmine Isa Qureshi, journalist, poet and ecologist)

'Inside Kate’s wild garden lies the key to a gentle revolution. This beautiful story recognises the power we have to support our wildlife and climate through the humble act of cherishing our gardens. Each leaf, flower and animal that makes its home within Kate’s wild sanctuary is a symbol of hope and resilience. This book is empowering, it's joyous... and it's very important. I loved every page!' (Megan McCubbin, author of Back to Nature)

Practical and uplifting - a wonderful listen

Kate reads her own work with such passion, bringing you into her world of her garden, Tosca the dog and all the wonderful creatures who she has drawn to live in her wildlife paradise. With practical tips on how to do the same and just so much love for nature. A call to action that is impossible to ignore. I loved this book.

Brilliant and inspiring

This is a wonderful book to read and listen to - really enjoyed the narration by the author too. I finished it within in 3 days as I couldn't stop listening. Have since bought the hard copy too so it's easier to refer back to some of the brilliant tips for helping and attracting more wildlife to our gardens. Kate's knowledge and passion is hugely inspiring and has given me even more ideas and motivation support my local wildlife too. A must read/listen if you care for nature and want to do your bit to protect it. Highly recommend.

Just wonderful!

Kate is such a force for good. What a wonderful book, I hope it will inspire people so that it isn’t just a handful of gardens, but all of the millions of gardens across the country helping nature to thrive again. This book is full of great tips and honest, feet on the ground, supportive advice. I hope someone has given drone bstard a copy!

A book everyone should read

It doesn’t matter if you even have a garden there’s something all of us can do to support our wildlife. Kate Bradbury’s passionate book opens your eyes to the plight of nature but also offers ideas how each of us, no matter where we live, can be more aware and help our wildlife survive and hopefully thrive.

A passionate and life affirming listen

I loved this book. Kate is so knowledgeable, and this highly personal account of the actions she is taking in her own garden and neighbourhood are really motivating. I cried at times, but also am full of hope that I'm on the right lines with my own garden.

Everyone should read this book

I loved listening to Kate reading her book and learned so much about the creatures that should be visiting my garden. I now look at my garden longing to see hedgehogs, butterflies, bees, Robin’s and more insects and how sad that these are so much in decline they are rarely seen. I hope Kate is able to get her message across to those in denial and those like me who just hadn’t really understood the magnitude of the problems we are creating on our own doorsteps. I am looking forward to creating a much more natural garden and hope I will see some more life in it. Thank you Kate

engaging and informative, slightly depressing

So much passion for the subject. The author is an expert in ecology and the socio-economic impact of modern life on the environment and gardening. I find that I feel slightly depressed after listening to a few chapters though and need a break to regroup. I feel more positivity would make this book more rounded. I think maybe a break from the 'we're all doomed and people are so ignorant and selfish' narrative would be welcome here. It comes across as slightly pompous in places.
