Summary

Gavin is creating a unique 'holiday experience’ - every facility any tourist who hates going abroad will ever want will all be available on a converted North Sea oil rig.

To test the facilities, he's hosting a reunion for his old school friends. He is so busy showing off that he doesn't notice that another group have invited themselves along - a collection of terrorist mercenaries who are occasionally of more danger to themselves than to the public.

No comic timing

I've read the book. made me laugh. Unfortunately the narrator has both a lack of comic timing and decent North East accent. these are both a shame. It wasn't unlistenable, but it could, I feel, have been much better.

Awful awful accents

Would you try another book written by Christopher Brookmyre or narrated by Angus King?

I LOVE Chris Brookmyre's books. The problem with this is entirely with the narration. I'm afraid Mr King's attempt at a Geordie and a Mackem accent were so appallingly bad that I literally had to stop listening as it was killing the enjoyment. I'm not from the North-East btw, it's just that the performance is so jarringly awful on those accents it really becomes impossible to ignore about 2/3rds of the way through when those characters are really at the forefront. I personally blame the director, should never have let a performance that bad be released. He's fine on other accents and I'm sure he's a capable actor but wow, awful performance on those accents.

Would you be willing to try another one of Angus King’s performances?

No.

Any additional comments?

Chris Brookmyre is absolutely wonderful and I have recommended him to loads of friends who are now fans.

Cheered my day.

Came late to this early Chris Brookmyre as the blurb had made me think it wouldn't suit me. Then I was totally riveted and laughing all through. Angus King is overall a great narrator and I forgive his dreadful Sunderland efforts here as his varied native Scottish for the main characters is so much more important.

A fantastic book - let down by Ausible

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Great story, well engineered, keeps you
reading

Who was your favorite character and why?

Has to be Ally, although Mtt and Simone + Vale are worthy of a mention

Have you listened to any of Angus King’s other performances? How does this one compare?

He reads well. Its not the voice that I thought of when I read the books, but he adds to my pleasure - an alternative view

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh

Any additional comments?

Audible have lost the last section of the book - pathetic!

Slow start but stick with it!

This should be a film! Gripping story with the only disappointment being that it ends so abruptly.

Awesome

Out there but fun. Great humour and one liners a plenty. Smiled all the way through. Great usual narrator.

Great fun, well written and unashamedly SCOTTISH

Don't listen to other reviews, the narration is fantastic, the Geordie accent is a bit off but not off-putting.

The book is a joy start to finish, well paced funny with lots of likeable characters.
