Summary

Hans Florine is a big-wall climbing legend in his own time. He holds the speed record on the Nose route of El Capitan, a 3,000-foot granite cliff in Yosemite Valley that's considered the Everest of the rock-climbing world. Ascending the Nose takes most climbers anywhere from 12 to 96 hours. Florine, along with climbing partner Alex Honnold, does it in an astounding two and a half hours.

But Florine's story is not one of super-human athletic prowess; it's one of persistence and dogged determination. In 30 years of climbing, he's ascended the Nose a mind-blowing, death-defying 100 times, more than anyone else ever has, and most likely ever will. In On the Nose, Florine describes the most dangerous, pivotal, and inspirational of those climbs, providing a rare look inside the adrenaline-charged world of competitive climbing in Yosemite Valley. He tells of his very first attempt on the Nose, which ended in failure after 14 hours, his friendships (and rivalries) with climbing's most colorful personalities, and his battle with Dean Potter to secure the definitive speed record on the Nose - an endeavor that's been called the wildest competition known to man.

Perhaps most interestingly, Florine attempts to answer the question why. Why would anyone undertake one of the greatest adventure epics on earth 100 times? His answers provide unique insights on how to live a satisfying life, how to achieve big goals, and how an otherwise ordinary guy can become a rock star.

How good can a book about one climb be - very good

As a lifelong climber and someone who has done the Nose this was great. I wondered if a book about one climb could be sustained, would Hans be an egotist? Well Hans did keep the interest going right to the epilogue, and he is a person I would like to climb with and sit and have a beer with. He has a passion to do the best he could do on The Nose and his ego was always second, likewise this book, unafraid to take on a co-author he has produced a story, and well read. Thanks Hans!

Great read

Very interesting story. Even to someone who doesn't climb.

I would cut the sound effects. But otherwise great.

An enjoyable Journey from racking onwards

An enjoyable journey into Hans time on the nose. I found with this book more than others had a great explanations of gear chosen for climbs, why and were they would be used And why That gears would be the right choice for its placement Hans. Bringing climbing back to its basics there may always be the perfect piece of gear .whether you have that on your rack, can afford to have it on your rack due to cost or weight . Will influence the choices made. the years the money was tighter was captured beautifully and And dream of the next purchase while climbing to aid your return to the same point

Why the music and sound effects?! Why?!

I’ll basically listen to and enjoy anything written by or about climbers, and this was no different. Except for the techno/club or epic ‘gladiator’ style music at seemingly random (certainly never suitable) moments. Killed it for me.

Good story, appalling performance

The background sound effects such as music, radio-tuning and breeze are just bizarre, unnecessary and distracting.

Annoying sound effects

Story ok, narration ok but the background sound effects and music to narration are intensely irritating. As such after 1hr I binned it

Interesting listen

Enjoyed the story, finding out why somebody would do something crazy as climb a really high wall so many times. The downside was the sections where it talks about gear used which to a non-climber went over my head and also the sound affects. Always good to know what such a person learns from their many years of experience doing something like this and the road they went down on to get achieve all this.
