Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Isobel and Jen have spent their entire lives following the rules - of their marriages, and their religion.

But when Isobel's husband leaves her, and Jen goes through unimaginable trauma, the religion turns its back.

Zelda has never done what's expected of her. Living on the outskirts of the community that she, Jen and Isobel were raised in, she's trying to find herself outside of the confines of the world she left behind.

As the lives of these women become entangled, they each face an uncertain future.

Will they find the courage to move forwards? Or will a lifetime of expectation prove too hard to escape...

All round excellent

This is a great concept for a story and extremely well written. Fascinated by all the female characters ( they were the focus obviously) and their different navigations of the situation
Recommend absolutely and will do for sure

I didn’t want it to end !

What an utterly fantastic book. The characters were so beautifully drawn that I was completely absorbed by them & their unfolding stories. The narrator did them justice.
Absolutely wonderful - I didn’t want to get to the end but I couldn’t stop listening.

Brilliant

This is an honest and fair view of this religion. Hopefully it opens up people's eyes to the systemic abuse within and what fundamental changes need to happen. It also sheds light on what trauma members and especially ex members experience almost daily.

What a revelation!

I didn’t know this book was about Jehovah Witnesses and I was absolutely fascinated by the three women and how they navigate their faith and disfellowship.

. I think the usual idea of that cult is complete distain and ridicule but the author really unravelled what and why they believe as they do. I worked with a lovely girl years ago and she was bright and intelligent and if we ever did talk about her faith then her answers where almost robotic and panicky like she knew I knew she didn’t really believe all of it. Another person I worked with from that faith was so slimy, he talked to my chest rather than my face and he was an elder. Makes you wonder.

There are good and bad people in all religions, countries, communities etc but I think novels like this are so important as they educate us in something we have preconceptions about or don’t understand.

Beautifully written, complicated characters and very moving.

Ouch...

Thank you for writing this amazing book! Thank you for finding the words to tell our stories. So many of us are still silenced, and you speak for us all.
Please read this book, if you want to understand, and hugs to you all who have, or are still living it.

A good audio book

Good story, well narrated. Gives an insight into the world of certain religious groups and how their world view can cause the same oppression and suffering from which they claim to be protecting their members. In particular the impact of gender inequalities that are the foundation of many world religions are examined here.

Story of My Life

I laugh at the absurdity of the situations, of the 3 main characters.
I know these people, I’ve met these people, I’ve lived the life of these people.
I really wanted the book to carry on, & I wasn’t ready for it to end.

Bravo to the author, for carefully crafting together this book. I’ve loved it.
I hope the authors’ life is now totally free, as is mine.

Ok but a little bit boring….

Initially really good but then it’s a bit predictable and boring… wouldn’t listen again. Happy ending, always nice
