Not your run-of-the-mill ghost stories
Rhew y Calon - Frost of Heart
This is a story about the cruelty of Nature and what happens when Jack Frost's consort has had enough. Here, Good and Evil are not so clearly defined.
I loved the story. It was my first encounter with both Michael Lynes and David Bosco and I was blown away.
Memories To Treasure*
An older family man stumbles upon a treasure chest which takes him back in time and back to what's worth living for, no matter what.
Heartbreaking but hopeful too. From my further reading, it seems the author is very good at tearing your heart to pieces and putting it back together again.
The Spirit
A young female spirit is sent forth into the physical world to reignite life and creation lost through the hubris of fallen angels.
An interesting take on the christian mythos.
A Grave Business
What if cemeteries became obsolete and ghosts were left homeless? Fear not. An eclectic bunch of characters comes to the rescue. Robots are involved.
The only story with a comedic bent in this collection. Narrator Mike Carnes' commitment to the ghostly voice had me cracking up.
Scary Love
A demon holds the soul of a woman's deceased husband hostage to enslave her because she's the daughter of Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun.
This story is based on Japanese mythology and was a bit confusing.
A Heart of Gold
A serial killer on Halloween. With pumpkins.
Not one of my favourites but it has the typical Michael Lynes weirdness.
The Lighthouse
The tragic tale of a lighthouse keeper's daughter and what happens to those who scoff at ghosts.
David Bosco brings this beautifully written story to life.
My Angel Comes*
A woman's final moments are made easier with the presence of one of her sons. The one who died when he was six years old.
Just lovely.
A Slice of Perfection*
In an alternative/future reality, everybody gets a Slice which allows you to redo moments of your life over and over. But it is finite and not everyone is satisfied with their own share.
The only sci-fi in the collection and one of my favourite stories. I'd love to see this expanded into a movie or TV show.
The Treehouse
A young girl and the ghost of her dead mother team up to take down the archetypical male predator.
Female victimhood is one of the recurring themes in Michael Lynes' work. I don't know how I feel about this one.
*Also appears in the collection "The Fat Man Gets Out of Bed"
