Summary

Sunday Times bestselling author Nora Roberts returns with a brand-new standalone novel—a story about the power of love to light a way through the darkness.

When he was nine, and his mother had her first deadly dance with cancer, Harry became a thief. Someone had to find food and pay the mortgage even if his mother was too sick to work. When his mother finally succumbs to cancer, Harry leaves Chicago but somehow he can't quite leave all of his past behind.

Harry lives a quiet, careful, rootless life—he can't afford to attract attention or get attached—until he meets Miranda. But just when Harry thinks he has a chance at happiness his old life comes back to haunt him. Harry has had dealings with some bad people in his past but none more dangerous than Carter LaPorte and Harry is forced to run. But no matter what name he uses or where he goes, Harry cannot escape. If he is ever going to feel safe, Harry must face down his enemy once and for all.

Only then can he hope to possess something more valuable than anything he has ever stolen.

Excellent

thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended. Well thought out plot. Sophisticated, funny, a much better book than many from this author.

Another great listen

I do love a Nora Roberts book. Different from her others but really enjoyed it all. She always has great narrators too so it’s a big tick from me.

Very odd and rather unpleasant.

This is so different from NR's romantic suspense, I've really had to think about it.

I get why he began stealing as a child, but not that his aunt condoned it. And to keep on after there was no need? It defied belief that at 18, he was a master thief, who had never been caught? No way. Sorry, it just didn't work for me.

This was the first NR book I have read where I found the lead characters rather unpleasant and unsympathetic. When Miranda meets up with him again, learns that he left her because she was being blackmailed, she immediately blackmails him herself!
This is not one I will listen to again, I'm afraid.

The only thing I felt unreserved pleasure in was the narration, which was excellent.

Brilliant!!

This was a great listen. Really tense and exciting. The main characters were great and the narrator was exceptional. I was so sorry to come to the end. I’ll be looking for more by this author and narrator.

Slow to start but glad I stuck it out!

I nearly swapped this title, I found it dull to start with… a slow burner but really picked up quite a way in. Worth sticking with. Loved the male narrator too - refreshing!

Needed editing

Overall I did enjoy this but it needed a good third taking out. The pacing seemed a bit off, so there was a huge amount of detail about an affair early on, but then we suddenly skip ahead 20 years. There was one heist too many for me, and that dragged, and I also found the romance side of it saccharine. I liked it enough to keep listening but this will be my last Nora Roberts I think. The narrator did brilliantly with all the different accents.

Excellent story line

This was a well thought out story line. To have started at a very young age the main caricature drew you into the story of his life. Before I had listened to half the story I was ordering another book from this author. Brilliant.
