Summary

Natural free spirit Irving Breen can remember being born - the thrill of returning to the land of the living after a long absence - and of cracking the code of life after death. Not bad for a lad with only one A-level in computer science.

Growing up as a cub newspaper reporter, he marries Emily, his angelic dancing partner, whose brother suffers from brain cancer but miraculously recovers in answer to prayer. Irving instinctively understands this is how miracles work - facing death, you enter a parallel world where your mirror image can be cured, but other things are different. It's a theory rejected by scientists as metaphysical speculation.

Life takes a downward lurch with the arrival of a ravishing redhead and tilts into trauma when his son dies at birth while Irving is with her. Overwhelmed by remorse, he desperately seeks another miracle in the form of quantum intervention - a key to unlock alternative universes where the boy may have survived.

But does such a key actually exist, given the scientific establishment's decree that movement between them is impossible?

Could the omniscient mandarins be wrong?

It has been known.
