Summary
The waters rose, submerging New York City. But the residents adapted, and it remained the bustling, vibrant metropolis it had always been. Though changed forever. Every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. Through the eyes of the varied inhabitants of one building, Kim Stanley Robinson shows us how one of our great cities will change with the rising tides. And how we, too, will change.

Amazing book with great characters
Really loved the book the fact that they were multiple performers according to who the story was focusing on at the time. Sustainability and the environment have been the focus of my life for almost a decade now. And I never thought I would read a book this interesting dealing with the subject matter. Only real complaint is a wish that all the performers read the lines of their characters even in the chapters that focused on other characters. Because some of the narrators weren't as good as others and doing the accents and mannerisms of the other characters. But that's not a big deal. Anyway highly recommend it.

Terrible
Worst book I have ever listened to. Full of random in depth finance references. Minor stories mixed in with the references. And a very disappointing ending. And I suffered it for 22 hours desperately hoping it would improve. It didn't 😤

Awesome
The narrators were incredible. It felt like they were the characters themselves and gave each character an individual feeling in my head. I didn’t want this story to end, I wanted to hear more adventures

Persistence required & rewarded
I have to admit that I almost gave up on this book during its extended and slow introductions to characters and scenarios. I also think that it can't be listened to continuously; time is required to reflect on those characters and their interactions as the stories progress.
However, persistence pays off, as those interactions and their complex natures are revealed. True, there is the odd, rather forced co-incidence and the occasional telegraphing of events, but the strength of the narrative allows these to be overlooked easily. The final chapter leaves the story open-ended; there is no happy conclusion, but somehow, it doesn't matter.
The ensemble performance is excellent.
I recommend this book to all, not just fans of science-fiction.

One narrator would be better.
Different narrators for the different narratives seemed like a good idea at first but ends up becoming an annoying distraction as they start to intertwine.

Really good fun
I read this after my mind was blown by ‘The Ministry For The Future’. 2140 is similar but definitely lighter in tone and, I think, weaker and less consequential for it. But it was gripping and the characters were fun once you get past some of their almost cartoonish failings. I really enjoyed this book but I doubt it will live in the memory as long as Ministry for the future.

Performances made it unlistenable
I have to say immediately that I didn't finish it. Not because it's a bad book, but the way the production changes performers meant that I kept losing track of the characters.
Usually narrators give each character a different voice and it's easy keeping track of who is who. But here with each chapter being read by a different performer it meant the voices of the characters kept changing and those subtle audio cues that good performers give different characters to help the listener were not just lost but actively confusing.
I can see from other reviews that some people found this novel approach a positive but for me it meant I didn't finish the book.

would have benefited from a vigorous edit
The concept is quite believable and the context well set up, but the many of the characters are poorly developed and the dialogue is excruciating in places. It is over long with a number of side stories that could easily have been excised without taking from the plot. Also, I really don't like audio books with an ensemble of readers. Inevitably inconsistencies arise between them, and there's always at least one reader that lets you down. Just pick one talented reader to do the whole thing.
