Summary

Bill Bryson's first travel book, The Lost Continent, was unanimously acclaimed as one of the funniest books in years. In Neither Here Nor There he brings his unique brand of humour to bear on Europe as he shoulders his backpack, keeps a tight hold on his wallet, and journeys from Hammerfest, the northernmost town on the continent, to Istanbul on the cusp of Asia. Fluent in, oh, at least one language, he retraces his travels as a student 20 years before.

Whether braving the homicidal motorists of Paris, being robbed by gypsies in Florence, attempting not to order tripe and eyeballs in a German restaurant, window-shopping in the sex shops of the Reeperbahn or disputing his hotel bill in Copenhagen, Bryson takes in the sights, dissects the culture, and illuminates each place and person with his hilariously caustic observations. He even goes to Liechtenstein.

fantastic!

fantastic! love bill bryson reading his own books. far better than the other narrators. hes got a great sarcastic droll sense of humour, very funny stories. the only parts I didnt like were the weird musical accompaniments, luckily they didn't happen often, very irritating. otherwise a great book!

1991. wow

To relive 1991 in 2020, a very interesting insight on how things are still the same and yet have changed.

Bill's humour and candidness

Another brilliant Bill Bryson excellent travel story I love his sense of humour but also his modesty.

Bill Bryson

Bill Bryson and his humour is just wonderful. Also recollections of Europe from 30 years ago is fascinating

Classic Bill Bryson, funny and entertaining all the way through

A typical American view of Europe, which allows more detached observation, combined with Bill’s, funny and self depreciating style

Entertaining memoir

He’ll go far, that Bill Bryson - a pure pleasure to travel with him on yet another entertaining, informative and provocative odyssey. Looking forward to the next one!

okay over all

I think this was a good story but old fashioned. the description of women is quite misogynistic but the travel and adventure was good

Really enjoyable

Bill Bryson’s books are excellent and even better when he is the narrator. He has a turn of phrase that few can match and an ability to inject humour into the direst of situations. I can understand why he is retiring and thank him for the pleasure he has given, but from this reader he will be very much missed.
