About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Business/Educational, 2014

Once considered tedious, the field of statistics is rapidly evolving into a discipline Hal Varian, chief economist at Google, has actually called "sexy". From batting averages and political polls to game shows and medical research, the real-world application of statistics continues to grow by leaps and bounds. How can we catch schools that cheat on standardized tests? How does Netflix know which movies you'll like? What is causing the rising incidence of autism? As best-selling author Charles Wheelan shows us in Naked Statistics, the right data and a few well-chosen statistical tools can help us answer these questions and more.

For those who slept through Stats 101, this book is a lifesaver. Wheelan strips away the arcane and technical details and focuses on the underlying intuition that drives statistical analysis. He clarifies key concepts such as inference, correlation, and regression analysis, reveals how biased or careless parties can manipulate or misrepresent data, and shows us how brilliant and creative researchers are exploiting the valuable data from natural experiments to tackle thorny questions.

You’ll encounter clever Schlitz Beer marketers leveraging basic probability, an International Sausage Festival illuminating the tenets of the central limit theorem, and a head-scratching choice from the famous game show Let’s Make a Deal - and you’ll come away with insights each time. With the wit, accessibility, and sheer fun that turned Naked Economics into a best seller, Wheelan defies the odds yet again by bringing another essential, formerly unglamorous discipline to life.

An accessible introduction

When I first started listening I really didn't understand the subject. By the time I got to the end, I found myself nodding at concepts - which I've since applied to my assignments.

It worked well for me and I will listen again when I have time.

Great for getting interested in data science

Not so good for actually learning to do it, but that seems to be the intention so can’t mark down for that.

Most importantly, this is a legit book that is rated well on GoodReads and not just full of fake reviews like 99% of audible books.

Great intro to stats

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is one of the best introductory statistics books I've listened to or read. It covers statistics as a general topic without getting bogged down in too much detail. Therefore, people are likely to come away with a clearer understanding of the topic overall. Many introductory texts focus on specific simple tests etc. and lose the overall concepts.

From A to B, I can recommend this to anyone

If you're anything like me you tend to remember the dread of the chalkboard. Do not dispair. This book guides you through the basics of statistics and examples behind it. I'm feeling much more confident now to learn more.

Intuitive and Factual Statistics

Let me begin by saying the narration is superb. The speaker is clear, crisp and knows the content very well to take appropriate pauses and introduce variations in voice.

However, my qualms are with the author. He uses a familiar theme throughout the book of providing counter arguments which force the reader to think about what could be the correct way to interpret statistics. But when discussing the Iraq War, he conveniently forgets to mention the immense loss of civilian life and destruction of public infrastructure, rather than basing his argument on 'what-if' Iraq did have weapons of mass destruction (even though he accepts USA didn't find any).

Statistics can be fun, informative and misleading

After reading naked economics some years ago I was excited to read this. I wasn't disappointed but after reading freakonomics and a few similar books as well as some Malcom gladwell books it wasn't as exciting as if I had listened to this first. those books are similar and he references some of them although he brings enough of his own material to make it a fascinating listen still. The one downside was some figures or calculations ( there's not a huge amount) were not easy to follow in the audiobook and I personally would have understood it better if I was reading it instead of listening

Interesting but wanted more

Lots of examples given and I'm pleased I now understand what regression analysis is. But I was kind of hoping that I'd also understand ANOVA and T tests and parametric versus non parametric.... All terms I was taught at uni but never understood.

Very well presented

It isn’t possible to make statistics genuinely easy to grasp, but this book does a good job trying.

Exceptional...

However, I must add, it is not for the faint hearted. I work with statistics and I had to stop what I was doing and really listen to some parts, this book really does put statistics into context and there are some excellent quotes I have already shared.

For non-statisticians this book may be a little much to digest. although, you do not need to understand all of the figures and jargon to appreciate the key message, that is data and statistics is more important now than it has ever been.
