About this listen

"'You knew they were there, didn't you?' Kahlan asked in a hushed tone as she leaned closer. Against the darkening sky, she could just make out the shapes of three black-tipped races taking to wing, beginning their nightly hunt. That was why he'd stopped. That was what he'd been watching as the rest of them waited in uneasy silence.

"'Yes,' Richard said. He gestured over his shoulder without turning to look. "There are two more, back there." Kahlan briefly scanned the dark jumble of rock, but she didn't see any others. Lightly grasping the silver pommel with two fingers, Richard lifted his sword a few inches, checking that it was clear in its scabbard. A last fleeting glimmer of amber light played across his golden cape as he let the sword drop back, in place. In the gathering gloom of dusk, his familiar tall, powerful contour seemed as if it were no more than an apparition made of shadows.

"Just then, two more of the huge birds shot by right overhead. One, wings stretched wide, let out a piercing scream as it banked into a tight gliding turn, circling, once, in assessment of the five people below before stroking its powerful wings to catch its departing comrades in their swift journey west. This night they would find ample food."

Critic reviews

"Jim Bond's narration imparts a mythical quality while transporting the listener to a world of wizards, soul-stealers, potions, and magic." ( AudioFile)

Best thing about this was the great side plots woven in to the main Richard plot. Lots of philosophizing which can be a bit mind numbing at times, but it was gripping as most of these books.

another good book in the series

They need to use a different narrator. it's like he is reading you a shopping list.

narration is utterly devoid of emotion.

Would you listen to Naked Empire again? Why?

I am a big fan of the sword of truth series, having read the books the suspense created by the narrator is amazing

A wonderful book. Once again the author creates characters of interest and depth. The world created and the politics of the world are fascinating. He gives both sides of the story here, allowing you not to see the bad guys as solely evil! Brilliant. The narrator is quite monotone but once you are into the book you don't notice it.

This book is great, good mix of new and old characters. Even the narrator Jim Bond isn't too bad :)

a much better installment than the previous, interesting story and some tense moments. Zedd and Addys story is particularly heartbreaking this book

An epic book full of every element you need for a great piece of writing; magic, action, love, grizzly scenes, as well as moral concepts. All these books feature wonderfully imagined lands with rich histories that add to the book's realism and make it difficult to put down. There are strong characters that have a lot of depth to them and the narrator tells the story with ease and expression the compliments the story well. I'm looking forward to the next book.

If you've read or listened to the starting books you'll know you want to read some more, personally I found the reading better than the listening, but these are still a great listen if you don't have the hours and hours to spend reading the books

Great listen
