Summary
There are threads in our lives. You pull one, and everything else gets affected.
When they were children, Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus, and Dave Boyle were friends. But then a strange car pulled up their street. One boy got in the car, two did not, and something terrible happened - something that ended their friendship and changed all three boys forever. Twenty-five years later, Sean Devine is a homicide detective. Jimmy Marcus is an ex-con who owns a corner store. And Dave Boyle is trying to hold his marriage together and keep his demons at bay - demons that urge him to do horrific things.
When Jimmy Marcus' daughter is found murdered, Sean Devine is assigned to the case. His personal life unravelling, he must go back into a world he thought he'd left behind. His investigation brings him into conflict with Jimmy Marcus, who finds his old criminal impulses tempt him to solve the crime with brutal justice. And then there is Dave Boyle, who came home the night Jimmy's daughter died covered in someone else's blood....

Blown away
It’s been years since I saw the movie so when I downloaded the book, I knew there were parts of me that stuck with it but WOW!!! The difference the years can make. From identifying with the daughter in the story when I first read it, to now connecting with the adult characters and having lived a similar youth where horrible things happened around you, I was drawn in by each and every character. And the writing was lyrical and beautiful despite the subject matter. I’m off to read ever other book by Dennis Lehane x

An American Crime Classic
I love this book and wanted to try the Audible version. Not disappointed. Richard Ferrone does a brilliant job of bringing the ensemble cast to life. These characters will live long in your memory. A stone cold American crime classic.

just fabulous
I think those complaining of the slow pace/long descriptions do not appreciate the weaving of a rich story of small-town crime, love and violence. This is a fantastic story and the narration is truly excellent. Thoroughly recommended.

Am I really reading the same book
I am really trying to enjoy this book, but my goodness - it is tortuous, using three paragraphs where two words would suffice. The narration is also slow and tedious, the plot is taking so long to materialise that I am losing the will to live.
I haven't come across a character that I can be bothered to care about, but I am only at chapter 8, I reckon there are another 10hours or so, maybe someone will pop up as being sufficiently interesting to follow! I doubt I can stay long enough to find out.

Over long
Started off ok and story was interesting enough but it progressed into a book that was at least 2 hours too long and a bit self indulgent, unfortunately.
