Summary

Since childhood Nila Carter has been made to spend every weekend at the family cabin. In her teenage years she believes it to be a prison; as an adult it becomes her sanctuary and means to survive.

When a mysterious outbreak occurs in India, Nila's brother, Bobby, a virologist with the CDC, places the family on a precautionary alert to be ready to bug out. Unlike anything he's ever seen, the rabies-like virus is not just deadly; it causes extreme violent behavior in those infected. Following her brother's advice, Nila begins to stockpile.

After months of preparing, just as it seems the virus is over, everything implodes, and Bobby tells his family to leave the city. With her family, Nila heads to the mountains and to her father's isolated land. There she is eventually joined by friends and strangers, all hoping to safely stay clear of the virus that grips the world. The plan is to wait until the virus burns out.

While there, the group forms a tight bond, feeling secure that they will beat the extinction event and in due course return home. As time moves on, Nila quickly learns there are things they cannot run from, and a virus is one of them. Despite how prepared they are, how secure the land, each day brings a new threat and a painful reality that not only is returning home a pipe dream, but the likelihood of all of them surviving is increasingly growing slim.

It’s ok

The character of Niles (Nila) is a bit of a whiner. Hopefully she gets stronger and less politically correct in the other books. But not a bad story

Okay

A free listen from Audible and it’s just an average zombie romp. I can’t believe some of the bad choices or naivety displayed by the central characters. Well narrated. Will leave my journey with this author here.

Good apocalyptic story

I really enjoyed this story with a good narration!

As a pandemic starts to sweep the US Nila and her family flee to her fathers cabin up country.

Believing that isolation was their best chance of survival, they encounter many others with the same idea. Whether they all survive or not remains to be seen.

Surprisingly brilliant

I would highly recommend this book, a story you can get your teeth into, action that keeps you on your toes, real life and emotional yet not soppy and it makes you think.
I had no idea what this was about, sure I read the synopsis before buying but it wasn't memorable by the time I came to listen. I'm glad the synopsis was brief or may not have bought it. Without spoiling it for others, I'd say it's a rare gem and despite the bare bones of the story being about something I'd usually show no interest in, it was so well written and read that when the book finished I was glad to see there is a second and a third! If your sceptical then give it a go.

A gripping apocalypse horror

Surprisingly graphic, listened to the whole book in one day. Even skipped TV to remain emersed in this world. Cleverly thought out.

mostly I enjoyed it and onto the next

over all I enjoyed it and I'm gonna read through next.
it's from your everyday woman's perspective trying to figure out whats happening and protecting her family. But she isn't the brightest bulb and must say the those two deaths didn't shake her quite the way you would expect. she seemed to move on from them pretty easy in my opinion but u guess they wanted the story to keep moving.

First Person zombie, focusing on the person

No gratuitous zombie wars, a tale about a woman and her family during a virus outbreak. Granted the virus does create Zombies but the focus isn't about the Zombies but more about family, heartbreak and survival.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Realistic zombies

Listened to this as it was included in my membership so took a chance on it. It was similar to The ‘So long lollipop’ series I’ve read before and it was a good listen to pass the and I liked the way the ‘zombies’ seemed more plausible in this story and the outbreak seemed more realistic, also not ever stranger they met was crazed & sinister which gets overplayed in so many books.
There are more books that follow this one and it was good enough that I’m interested enough to carry on listening them.

No surprises but entertaining

It’s a zombie story, there aren’t really any new elements to this but it is very entertaining. It’s a page turner (well in audio) but the main character is irritatingly naive towards the end. Up to halfway through her actions are understandable, by the end I imagine all the male characters rolling their eyes as they have to explain their reality to her again
