Summary

It was the most fashionable place to stay in London, until murder made a reservation. Solve the puzzle in this new mystery from USA Today bestselling author of the Glass and Steele series.

December 1899. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Cleopatra Fox moves into the luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in the hopes of putting hardship and loneliness behind her. But the poisoning of a guest throws her new life, and the hotel, into chaos.

Cleo quickly realizes no one can be trusted, not Scotland Yard and especially not the hotel’s charming assistant manager. With the New Year’s Eve ball approaching fast and the hotel’s reputation hanging by a thread, Cleo must find the killer before the ball, and the hotel itself, are ruined. But catching a murderer proves just as difficult as navigating the hotel’s hierarchy and the peculiarities of her family.

Can Cleo find the killer before the new century begins? Or will someone get away with murder?

Disappointing

I love C J Archer stories and was excited to read this one. Unfortunately I was really disappointed. Many of the characters are quite sweet and endearing but the main character, Cleopatra Fox is nosy, meddling, and quite arrogant, and I really didn't like her at all. I also found the delivery of the story quite dumbed-down. Such a shame.

Boring from characters to the story

slow, struggled to the 3 chapter and left there. why would I loss my time with a main character that the writer didn't manage to make me feel to care at all and the rest so predictable?

Great tale

Excellent story, nicely paced. I guessed the guilty party quite early on, but that didn’t detract. My caveat is using the same narrator for all C J Archer’s books. I’ve been following the Glass and Steele books, and associate the voices with those characters. Some of Ms Hussey’s vocals mannerisms are a littlest awkward, and sometimes grate. I may swop to reading a physical book for this series.

OK simply OK

There just doesn’t seem much to write home about with this novel. I’m not sure if it is the way it is delivered or the way it is written that made this quite bland? The characters are 2d and never engage. And the main character is annoying.

Very enjoyable

This is a very lighthearted look into the MYfair Hotel around the year 1900. The characters are believable and all have a place in this wonderful story. Brilliantly narrated.

I can't forgive her.

I have listened to every book available from CJ Archer & this is a miss for me. Cleo is not charming enough to forgive the destruction of a man's life & career. No one is.

disappointed

helps if a person likes the main character but found her to be stupid, quick to run down a bad path as a solution and just not likeable. will not continue with series. BTW, the male character was likeable, would have been better to have him as main character.

Hussey or a Lady?

Which provoked me more? I first heard Marian Hussey perform Monsters and Manners. I quickly fell in love with the narratrix and the series! Murder and the Mayfair was recommended to me on Audible and when I saw Marian's name I was sold. Next came the Lady, Cleo Fox. Her story was charming and elegant yet grimy and cheesy. Overall I adored the storyline and the characters. I kept thinking Cleo and Harry would end up together but the story (mostly) let out romance which ended in relief for this novel. Just a new girl trying to fit in while Curiosity drew her to solve a crime. Very entertaining indeed.

Annoyingly naive heroine

Cleo has few redeeming characteristics and is determined to plow down obviously incorrect avenues for 3/4 of the book. She throws people under the bus with wild accusations without a second thought, while breaking numerous rules and laws herself. Also, most of the other characters were very shallow and had personalities that vacillated from hot to cold so quickly and without reason that it felt very forced, unrealistic, and not appropriate for the time period.
The reader did a lovely job with the voices and made it easy to follow who said what.

Good but simple

The main character is a little too naive and quick to jump to conclusions. Almost unrealistically

side characters are what made this one work

Story was a bit predictable -- as was the main characters. The side characters -- the hotel staff and the Bainbridge family -- were the ones that made this bearable. Out of CJ Archer's female leads, I didn't really get Cleo. I don't understand her motivation -- she waffled between wanting to have purpose and being extremely curious, which kind of made her have an arrogant air about her.

She was also a bit of an elitist, which I didnt like.

Armitage was boring.

Marian Hussey's performance is superb as always.
