Story
Bernardine Evaristo's 2019 Booker win - the first by a Black woman - was a revolutionary moment both for British culture and for her. After three decades as a trailblazing writer, teacher and activist, she moved from the margins to centre stage, taking her place in the spotlight at last. Her journey was a long one, but she made it, and she made history. Manifesto is Bernardine Evaristo's intimate and inspirational no-holds-barred account of how she did it, refusing to let any barriers stand in her way.

With a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the work of Charles Dickens, this magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers - a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village - will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

It will take you by surprise
What made the experience of listening to Mr Loverman the most enjoyable?
The book is beautifully written, as one would expect from Ms Evaristo. This is the story of secret love, told in such an engaging style, with such beautifully drawn characters you can't help but be fully engaged in what is such a sad tale. It had me laughing out loud in places, and near to tears in others. The book is a joy.
Any additional comments?
The performance of James Goode was stellar. He brought authenticity to the characters, and read so beautifully I want to hear more from him. He was the perfect choice to read such a wonderful novel.

The most captivating narration I have ever heard
A well written, interesting story which cleverly highlighted a tabu subject as perceived through the eyes of four generations in one family. Each one offering a differing perspective of homosexuality.
Sadly societal prejudice dictated an almost complete life of shame and secrecy. Which was sensitively highlighted.
The narrator added an element of realism which captivated me, I felt I was in the room with the character as he told his story and hung on his every word.... the vocal style was soothing and emotive. It skilfully conveyed a first hand account of a highly sensitive topic. One of the few books which was better in audio than print.
More from James Goode the narrator please!
The only thing I should point out with this audio was that James’s voice was so soothing I often fell asleep listening to it

Fantastic story, beautifully written
I loved every moment of Mr Loverman! Bernardine Evaristo creates such real characters, Barry reminded me SO MUCH of my late grandfather, especially the hilarious way he describes other people around him. Donna, Dan and Maxine were also very recognisable characters brought to vibrant life. Morris was the only one who didn't really feel like a character to me, but I think that's a feature of the two dimensional way Barry sees his partners. Really loved every moment of it.

Mr Loverman
Loved this. Really funny, poignant in parts and a lot of history thrown in. Barry and Maurice are two elderly men who love one and another but family, life and the law stop them being together till they are in their 70's. Alongside the laughter there is a lot of sadness too and I really felt for them both.
Times move on and the law regarding homosexuality changes Barry narrates all the could haves and should haves he could have had with Maurice .....love lost.
A book full of life and colour.
Well narrated by Mr Goode.

What did you like most about Mr Loverman?
I loved this audiobook and a big part of it was the narration. He brought the characters alive and I was engrossed. At the end I felt as if I had lost a friend.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mr Loverman of course
What does James Goode bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I don't know what it would have been like reading the story compared to listening to it but I worry that I would have missed some of the tenderness and humour.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Nearly but wanted to spin it out and enjoy it more.

Surprising gem
This isn't my usual type of listen. I don't do romance novels, have no particular interest in niche writing (LGBTIAQ+, race-led etc etc) but I liked the premise and the sample was good.
It's an excellent performance by James Goode. I can't attest to the quality of the Antiguan accent but the characters were all well-voiced/acted. It was clear who was speaking. His conversational tone was perfect. I loved the dry humour; his delivery was spot-on. The delivery was fantastic and I'd definitely keep an eye out for more things by him.
The story was interesting and well-thought out. The humour was definitely to my taste. The idea of different perspectives was a good one. My only criticism was the trope of "black fathers leave their children because of slavery" ... Dr Thomas Sowell would and has disagreed with that and given he has always had evidence to back up his claim, I'll believe him. It was a shame to hear that piece of lazy victimhood in what was otherwise a good story. (I would urge anyone to go and read/listen to Dr Sowell on the subject.)
I doubt I'd pick up anything else by the same author purely because her other works seem very right-on PC and frankly I'm more interested in the story.
I did enjoy this book however and I cannot praise James Goode enough. He needs more good authors to get him to read their works!
