Summary

Two lost souls find love in this heartfelt historical romance from New York Times best-selling author LaVyrle Spencer.

In town, they called her "Crazy Widow Dinsmore". But Elly was no stranger to their ridicule - she had been an outsider all her life, growing up in a boarded-up old house under the strict eye of her eccentric grandparents. Now she was all alone, with two little boys to raise, and a third child on the way.

Will Parker drifted into Whitney, Georgia, one lazy afternoon in the summer, hoping to put his lonely past behind him. He yearned for the tenderness he had never known, the home he'd never had. All he needed was for someone to give him a chance.

Then he saw her classified ad: WANTED - A husband. When he stepped across Elly Dinsmore's cluttered yard, Will knew he had come home at last....

Heartwarming

LaVyrle Spencer is, in this humble professor's opinion, the most estimable of historical romance writers. Her descriptive prose draws one into the worlds of her making, evoking emotions and images as if one were the main characters experiencing every event for oneself, whether male or female. I thought I had read every one of Ms. Spencer's books, until I came across this jewel. I was riveted all the way through this charming and heart-wrenching story, drawn to return to the twists and bends of the story as a bee is to honey, completely mesmerized until the compelling conclusion.

A lone drifter in the 1940s, attempting to put his past and greatest mistake behind him, resorts to the last job available to reprobates such as himself in yet another small town: as hired help to "crazy Elly", a young, reclusive widow with two young children and another on the way. Forced together by necessity in order to survive, the two are grudging companions at first, then gradually open their hearts to one another. The long, winding road along their journey to acceptance and ultimate love is threatened by forces beyond their control, through new territory in the South Pacific with the war against Japan, circling back to a deception repeating the past. Will this little family's newfound joy together be wrenched away?

This story is as earthy, bittersweet, and gut-wrenching as life itself. This is a tale of family and friendship, loneliness and anguish... but ultimately, redemption - with the realization that true love and forgiveness is healing and lasts forever.

Emily Sutton-Smith was amazing with the delivery of the story

Best Book Ever!

This is a beautiful story! It is so beautifully written and so much character development for Will Parker and Ellie. I love this book it was made into a movie with Christopher Reeves. The movie is good but does not do the book justice!

A beautiful story, in another time, that never grows old!

I had read this novel several years ago probably in the 90s. But actually listening to the audiobook made it seem almost real. I have always loved Ms Spencer’s novels, and look forward to other audiobooks by this author

I've read most of LaVyrle Spencers books. This is one of my favorites. The Narrator was awesome, she really does a good job changing her voice for each character. The story is engaging and hard to stop listening to.
