Summary
Over 37.4 million Americans are expected to quit their job in 2022. If you want to prevent your staff from being a part of this stat, keep reading.
According to Marcus Buckingham, the world's most prominent researcher on strengths and leadership at work, “People leave managers, not companies.” So who are the types of managers that people will stick around for?
What if building a thriving, motivated team didn’t come by accident? What if there were simple, reproducible practices that would move your department or organization in the right direction? What if you could be more than just another boss in your team’s life? What if you could be a leader that your team loves to follow?
In More Than a Boss, you will discover…
- Five strategies for managing yourself (hint: not just your time).
- Seven shortcuts for knowing your team.
- One tool that will motivate nearly any team member.
- What the most popular TED Talks have in common.
- The one tool managers utilize that makes a lifelong impact, while actually saving time.
- When the best time to fire a staff member is (hint: it’s before you hire).
- How more accountability could actually improve the working environment.
This is an audiobook about the basics. I won’t tell you how to become CEO or double your salary, but if your hope is to become the boss that you would have wanted, this is the audiobook for you.
While this can be a great tool for veteran managers, it is designed to be accessible for anyone, especially first-time managers. The language, examples, and tools will relate to you whether you have a team of two or 200. Your team may not even consist of paid staff. Most of my experience with these tools has been working with volunteers in the non-profit world.

Insightful
A great book if you are about to become a boss or you are looking to improve your skills as a manager of people
Looks at the role of a leader from a different perspective and I particularly enjoyed Ch3 and it’s psychological content.
Peppered with anecdotes of the author’s personal experiences throughout and helpfully signposts to other useful resources

A Fountain Of Information
This is an amazing little book packed with great information for those starting out on their management journey and for those that may be some way in and think they know it all. Having started on this path fairly recently there are a lot of tips I currently practice but certainly lots I have taken away from listening to this book. For me the tone was set early on by advising on procrastination. Never ever give yourself say two weeks to do a task when you know it will only take a week because that is exactly what you will do. The second thing that resonates close with me is the need to build trust with your direct reports and there is a chapter which really goes into this and the importance of it. The book is well structured and narrated and packed with good advice. I highly recommend

Empowerment is more than a boss.
More than a Boss is about becoming more than just a designated leader. I have had several administrators and school principals in nearly two decades as a teacher. Good leadership is more than a title and giving orders. Outstanding leadership is becoming more than a boss who leads others to do their best because they want to do it. Great leaders attract great people. In this audiobook, the author shares about six strategic tools for leadership within an organization. In the Marines, leaders stressed always knowing their Marines. The same holds when you lead and become more than just a boss. When you get off focus, turn this on and listen to it to recharge your batteries. Keep a copy in your desk drawer.

Effective tools on leadership.
So far this audiobook is good. It’s funny cause I feel like I already know a lot of the content just from life experience and education. It’s a good thing! But I am marking the ideas that I find helpful or intriguing so that I can refer back to those ideas once in a while! A very good listen!

Excellent book for any manager
I have owned and run many businesses, and hired hundreds of employees and managers. It is surprising how hard it is to find managers who actually know how to manage. This will be required reading for all my future managers.

Confidence boosting and very useful
Having just started a new management job I was looking for an audible that provided me with some guidance and tools that I could use in my new role. I was scared of the unknown but felt confident in my ability to do well in the new role as commercial lead for a bank. The book was really useful, from start to finish and my favourite chapter was 10 secrets of superior communication which was a must-listen to anyone wanting to get ahead in their new role. Highly recommended.

At Home Boss
In my career life I really don’t manage people, but I do have to manage my time, my projects and my own personal anxiety. In my home life though I manage my family (which is a huge job in itself). I found this book to have several suggested actions to consider that I can apply to all of those areas of my life. It was an encouraging read and really gave me some good ideas to better understand my ‘team’ (aka kids) and how we can work better together despite our differences and even utilize our differences to make something even more grand….so much so that I have even begun testing my kids with the Enneagram Personality Test that Nick suggestions to better understand each of them.
