About this listen
If you haven't met a Moomin yet, you're in for the most magical fun! The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Tove Jansson's endearing classic, Moominpappa at Sea, read with warmth (and some lively character voices) by the comedian Hugh Dennis. A Moomintroll is small and shy and fat, and has a Moominpappa and a Moominmamma. Moomins live in the forests of Finland. One day Moominpappa is feeling at a loss. He has no idea what to do with himself because it seems everything has already been done. So he takes his family off to start a new life in a lighthouse on a tiny, rocky island far out to sea. It's rather quiet and lonely at first, but as they begin to explore their unusual surroundings the Moomins discover some funny and surprising new things about themselves.

Also for adults
I listened to this when I wanted to relax. Moomins are classics for Finns, but it took 35 years before I got hold of these books. I had already read comics as a young adult and they are good too. The Moomin books are much better from an adult's point of view than the animations from TV, which I think are mostly suitable for children.

Not just for kids
These Moomin books are delightful to listen to and can be enjoyed by children and adults. The characters are wonderful and the settings of the stories are magical. Hugh Dennis does a great job narrating - especially his use of different accents for the characters. There are universal themes running through the stories about being the hero, feeling abandoned etc... So beautifully written and a quality production.

A darker Moomin...
Overall very enjoyable - although it took a while to get used to Moominpappa's Yorkshire accent...
This is a darker story - of loss, discontent and loneliness - well narrated and very engaging.

Mid life crisis - child’s book
Big fan of Moomins books but was disappointed as a child reading this one. Sad and melancholy in places. Well read as always.

Hmmm not my cup of tea/contains spoilers
Although I love the work of Tove Jansson, I can't say that I enjoyed this book as much as the other ones. I didn't quite manage to get drawn into the story and I thought that nothing quite significant happened. Plus that cliffhanger at the end of the book, as the Moomins don't return to their own home in the end, was a bit of a disappointment for me.
