Summary
A new emotional and gritty drama from the best-selling author of The Throwaway Children.
After her mother's death, 20-year-old Sophie Ross is left orphaned, with only her erstwhile nursemaid and faithful friend, Hannah, for company. Penniless and with little chance of an income, she looks for work as a governess in London to avoid destitution.
But unbeknownst to Sophie, her mother instructed Hannah to post a letter to Trescadinnick House in Cornwall upon her death. The letter will be the catalyst that changes Sophie's life forever as she learns of her mother's doomed romance and family she left behind in Cornwall.
The Penvarrow family welcomes Sophie into their fold, but the new life she's built is threatened by secrets and lies that soon come to light....

disappointing
I've read several books from this author which I've enjoyed. I thought sisters of St. Crox was brilliant and more recently Forgotten children I thoroughly enjoyed but whilst a pleasant story this one was far to Mills and Boon

Probably my favourite book by this author!
I've read most of this authors books now, and I love them all but this one has to be my favourite I think! I love all of the characters and their relationships between them. It's a must read if you enjoy this author! The narrator is very good at portraying the different characters too.

Diney Costelor
She had true talent with her writing to capture the audience to want to go right through to the end. Wondering what happens to the characters. Thank you Diney

I love Diney Costello books, but not this.
Unfortunately I found this a bit of a slog. Unlike other reviewers I thought the narration stilted & irritating. I must say that all the other books of hers I’ve read, i’ve really enjoyed. This story I’m afraid though, was just a bit too predicable.

Loved it
The audio was a bit rough in some places... But I absolutely loved the narration and story. Even better than the throw away children!

wonderful, heartwarming story of of life as it was for some
When women had little choice but to be looked after by men. Some were lucky, some not, but no man is an island no matter how strong they think they are.

Predictable story line
If you like Victorian gothic, this is for you: complete with orphans, wicked uncles and violent storms! The story line is pretty predictable, but a pleasant listen nonetheless.

A lovely....
storyline with some great characters and antics within the book. The narrator was very good at using different voices for the characters.
