Summary

World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea - the power of our mindset.

Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment but may actually jeopardise success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades as well as reach our own goals - personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

Don’t bother

Well, that’s hours of my life that I’ll never get back. I was going to give up part way through but persisted in the hope it would get better. Basically, It is based on the idea there are two types of mindset; the fixed mindset, and the growth mindset. The fixed mindset believes you are restricted by your natural abilities and aptitude’s, and the growth mindset is the belief you can always improve with hard work, training etc. Sound interesting? I thought so too. But then that is pretty much it. Doesn’t really elaborate much further. Just gives tonnes and tonnes of examples: “this person did this because they have a fixed mindset, but this person did that because they had a growth mindset. Over, and over, and over again. The same thing. Really boring, and disappointing. Even towards the end where you’re hoping for some conclusion or some actual constructive advise, you don’t really get it. Save yourself the time. Read this review and you have basically read the book, but in a fraction of the time.

Robot voice

I am not sure I can get used to this. First audiobook and her voice sounds so robotic... a bit of a disappointment.

robotic voice ruins listening experience

The strange robotic voice is so incongruent with the topic it makes it very hard to enjoy and learn from. I gave up at chapter 3.

Robotic voice spoils this

Self help books are already going to be repetitive, but the robotic voice narrating this painful to listen to.

Interesting book, shame about the narrator!

The theory behind Carol Dweck's book is fascinating and thought provoking. I bought it on several recommendations, and they were all well-founded. However, the narrator made it so difficult to listen to! Her intonation was wrong, and I spent the first five or six chapters wondering if it was actually an automated voice rather than a real person. She got easier to listen to later on in the book, but I think it was just that I had got used to her voice then and could follow her more easily through familiarity with her tones.

Thoroughly engaging

Lots of anecdotes thtat allowed a wide understanding of growth mindset. I would have liked the last chapter to be longer - how to put the growth mindset into practice.

Robotic narrator

My biggest issue with this tittle is the narrator sounding very robotic, very tiring.
Also, so many examples of behaviours gets a bit boring.

Horrible audio

I was really excited about this book, and forgot to listen to the sample. Horrible robot voice. Not a chance I’ll be listening to this for ten hours. Sad.

Tough going in some parts but worth persisting!

Personally did not find the narrator’s voice easy to listen to. Some chapters dragged for me, particularly the ones on sport and business but likely due to them being outside of my scope of interest. Overall , the content is valuable and I’ve gained some useful advice to put into practice!
