Summary

Tired of guessing what they’re really thinking? Read people in every situation—in person, on a screen, or in writing—using the new science of psycholinguistics, from a New York Times bestselling author and consultant to the FBI, CIA, and NSA.

“A treasure trove of concepts, ideas, and tools that we can all master to be safer and happier. It’s a must-read!”—Joe Navarro, author of Dangerous Personalities

What did your boss mean in that email? Is your mechanic stretching the truth? Whether you’re engaged in a casual conversation or a high-stakes negotiation, it’s critical to understand the subtext of a situation. But with so much interaction happening on screens—via email, texts, or video chat—we are losing the ability to interpret expressions and cues. Furthermore, since many are now savvy about the meaning of body language, it’s become even harder to discern someone’s true thoughts or intentions.

A leading lie-detection expert who instructs the FBI and other security agencies, noted psychotherapist David Lieberman, PhD, takes “people reading” to a whole new level. Drawing on the latest research in psycholinguistics—the cues embedded in spoken and written speech—he shows you how to apply his cutting-edge methods to countless everyday situations, including:

  • Detecting the messaging behind passive language, personal or impersonal descriptions, and level of detail.
  • Determining whether someone’s account of any incident is the truth or a work of fiction.
  • Finding out whether a potential hire, dating app match, or new babysitter is trustworthy or hiding something.

Nobody wants to be played a fool. Mindreader will help us identify who can be trusted, and who may be out to get us.

Waste of a credit for common sense observations

I regret using an entire credit to listen to this. The first hour is interesting as it at least points out body language interpretations. But really about 90% of the book is stuff you should already know like what avoiding eye contact, phrasing used in conversation entails. The last 3 hours of the book just goes over stuff you would learn in a psychology 101 class. And half of the stuff he talks about is just assumptions, some being false. "Oh the person uses long pauses, big terms, or doesn't keep eye contact, THAT means they're trying to deceive you!!" Umm no it doesn't David Leiberman, any introvert will do that naturally, and being a intellectual that uses big words in their vocabulary doesn't mean your being deceived. According to this guy, pretty much everything a person does is either trying to deceive you, or defensive in nature.

This book isn't even worth listening to the measly 6.5 hours it offers, let alone using an entire credit on. The only way I can see this being close to worth it is if he included his past books in a package deal with this one. Otherwise save your money, unless you really know absolutely nothing about people in general.

Not What I Expected

This was just a basic psychology book similar to the ones I had in college. There was only minimal time given to lying, which is what I was most interested in. The book is fine if you’re looking for material on abnormal psychology. All of it I’d heard a hundred times before; hence, I was very disappointed.

informational

I love learning more about the human condition. This book walked me through the scientific reasons why we act the way we do as humans and what that means. The book gave examples of what that would look like in real time and making it more relatable.

Explains people I don't understand

This book explains the reasons that smart, educated people put their intelligence on hold and instead submit to follow individuals whose fundamental beliefs are opposite of their own. Now I understand.

Fascinating!

Having always been interested in the human mind and behavior, this is a great way to approach a very complex issue. I have found myself pulled into conflicting viewpoints about a number of psychological traits and behaviors. The neat simplification presented here gives the needed reminder to step back and look at the big picture. It’s all right there in front of us, really!

Good but culturally challenged

Hello Fellow readers. Overall I thought this was a great book. However, as a black man, I found this book very good to see how a black man might be perceived. That was and is culturally challenging!!! When I finished the section on how to tell when a person is not telling the truth, I found it very interesting to hear from a powerful and controlling culture where the listener has no reason to be offended or defensive about an offensive comment or accusation could and should just should say or answer YES/NO on the comment that was made. Anything stated beyond that is reason for suspicion and further pressing of the subject. Of course, the person in power will likely get the more emotional response as they press the person in lower status about the subject. Wow!!! How privileged it must be not to see your people totally crushed by negative opinions, lies, and hatred that you feel no deep emotional commitment to ensure that those types of opinions of yourself never ever even get started never mind the gigantic important issue of keeping a pristine reputation if you are a person of low social power and think you want to get ahead in life or not join the millions of black people or other “low social power” people in life who have been falsely accused of a crimes that they never committed could not shake the accusation because of worldwide social biases. It happens all over the world. Not just black and white. The issues of “Social Power” vs. “No Social Power” is totally missing in those chapters about reading a lie. Take it from a black man that knows…. You can never let your guard down about who you are and what you stand for no matter what your country, color, race, etc. if you are on the low end of the social latter… Those in power will crush you at will if they think they are right when in fact they are wrong about their assumptions about you. It happens all over the world and keep powerless people at the submissive discretion of those in power. How many women in America have had their entire careers set on fire by some fresh mouth remark made by a senior executive about her being a “XXX” and it stuck!!! It stuck because of place, time, and attitudes about women at the time. Never let those things take root!!! Just read this book closely to see how your being viewed by people in power...

Otherwise, I think this book was very interesting and well worth the time...
