Summary

Seth Andrews idolized Rush Limbaugh. He listened to Glenn Beck. He read Ann Coulter. He watched Fox News. He was an evangelical Christian once tethered to right-wing media, which constantly warned of an attack on American values by liberals and secular humanists. Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist.

This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution. It's an exposé of conservative media's "closed systems" which constantly feed on (and feed into) public outrage, ignorance, bigotry, and fear. It's also the story of one man's personal journey into a larger and better world.

Disturbing and compelling in equal measures

It's hard to try to put yourself in the headspace of someone who thinks in such a way. Hearing it from someone who has thankfully escaped such a harmful worldview is fascinating. The 'harmful part is laid out very clearly as well.

Great perspective

This book is an absolute must listen for those who wish to articulate a broader understanding to family or friends that are trapped in the Fox News / right wing feedback loop

Wow

Enjoyed this a great deal. I used to be a Fox News junkie so I could wholeheartedly relate to your trials and tribulations with the right-wing pundents. This was a great look into those times, but more importantly it was a relief to know I wasn't alone.

Thanks

Another Great Lesson

What a great eye opening trip down memory lane. This book like his Deconverted book is definitely one that hit home for me, if you question your beliefs are looking to see the mind of a thinking atheist then this one is for you. Can’t recommend both books enough!

Seth Doesn’t Disappoint...Again!

If you love hearing Seth’s awesome voice and listening to his shows, you’ll LOVE this one. My wife is a Fox News atheist and Trumper (I’m still not sure how that happened). She loves Seth and was willing to listen to some of it. Although she goes from zero to sixty in 2 seconds with rage when you speak badly of Donald, she remained cool the entire chapter I played for her. This is really great for anyone. It’s not aggressive or offensive and definitely stated the truth. Great book Seth! I can’t wait for your next one.

Seth loves scary stories

This is a fascinating skeptical book about the "other side".

Seth has a great radio voice and his unique charm that comes through on the page.

There's some general political and religious commentary, but it's mostly auto-biographical.

Another Awesome Book!

This book took me back to the beginning of Fox news and brought me up to today. I appreciate looking into the history & how religion has blended with alleged news reporting.

If this book was to persuade, it misses the mark

I respect Seth for looking inside himself to make his change to whatever he believes. I think he should have started with the last chapter, not because he targets liberals but the approach he took where he can call out crazies but additionally See thru their basis foundation and show how it hurts a more reasonable position it’s rooted in. It’s balanced and sets up a good basis for persuasion. He should have taken the same approach to the Conservatives where there is a call out of craziness but can discuss the reasonableness of where they are rooted. He does this slightly but this is very one sided in this approach. Without doing this, it comes across as hyperbolic and simple minded. I wish there was more persuasion which would have made this a much better book.

Thanks!

I love Seth, and this book so closely parallels my journey, except it took me much longer. I love how he talks about binary thinking. I was just talking to someone about how I miss nuance. This explains a lot of that.
