Summary

2012 marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of C. S. Lewis’s classic, Mere Christianity. Having sold over half a million copies in the UK alone, his overview of Christianity has been imitated many times, but never outdone. The book is comprised of the legendary radio talks which he gave during the war years.

Mere Christianity brings together Lewis’s legendary broadcasts from the war years; talks in which he set out simply to ‘"explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times."

Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity’s many denominations, C. S. Lewis provides an unequalled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith. This scintillating collection confirms C. S. Lewis’s reputation as one of the leading writers and thinkers of our age.

Jesus, as relevant today as He was yesterday.

No chapters. Free on YouTube (with chapters)

A great book, but this exact same recording is free on YouTube, and has links to the sections and chapters which Audible, either due to negligence or a bug, bafflingly lacks.

Worth reading regardless on your religious disposition

Really good book, the philosophical and moral angle CS Lewis uses at the beginning of the book is refreshing and helpful. If you're a Christian it allows to see things from a philosophical and very relatable point of view that you can share with non-christians and other christians alike. Towards the later half of the books Lewis's thoughts on sexual desire are interesting.

Brain ache

I was really keen to read C S Lewis' work as I had heard so many good things about his take on Christianity. The reviews also supported this. What a disappointment! Not only did his ideas seem so outdated but, with his reference to homosexuality being wrong and his use of a derogatory word to describe a black person, I found it difficult and offensive to listen to. The non stop narration without notable breaks in the chapters gave the experience an unnecessary intensity. As a Christian myself wanting to learn more, I found this book off putting and I certainly will not be recommending it to my non Christian friends.

Help to understand

Where does Mere Christianity rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As it is only my second book and the other was not good, this is the best I have heard.

Any additional comments?

This book helps Christians and non Christians to really look into why it makes sense to believe in God.The writer goes into real life things that can be used as proof of God. Great writing and delivered very well.

Even if you are not Christian...

...and if you are, but are struggling at making sense of it all, c.S.Lewis’ Mere Christianity will be a true jewel.
Please keep in mind these talks took place “almost” a century ago, so do try to contextualize some comments (very very few). This audiobook is a master piece and has been incredibly helpful and rewarding.

Brilliant

This book is so simple, yet so thought provoking. I kept on pausing and trying to absorb before carrying on listening.

I highly recommend this book, whether you are questioning Christianity or looking to reignite your faith or looking for a simple way to explain your believes to your friends.

I will listen to this book again and again and again. Highly recommended.

Brilliant apologetics

C S Lewis delivers brilliant apologetics in Mere Christianity. Everyone in Christian ministry should include this book in their studies. I have read the book before and heard it now audibly. I loved the content but didn't like the style of reading.
