Summary
A sweeping Christian fiction epic, Maximus is part mystery, part detective story, and filled with intrigue.
General Maximus is a battle-weary commander of one of Rome's finest legions. When he returns from a long, bloody campaign, he finds himself questioning his life. Word has reached Rome of a man named Jesus, who is causing a stir in faraway Judea. Maximus, disguised as a Jew, is sent to investigate the situation and assess his potential threat to Rome. In this innovative rendering of the story of Christ, we see Jesus from the perspective of an outsider. Stripped of his cultural identity, Maximus is therefore free to ponder whether he can believe Jesus and find a new purpose in his own life.

A fresh view of the bible times from the standpoint of a Roman general. some elements weren't quite factually right, but hey, it's fiction

Not my usual book but good.
Not my usual type of book, but I enjoyed it once I accepted the strong American accent of Adam Verner who was good, actually. I liked the different voices he did.
It was interesting to hear Jesus's story from an unusual perspective.

Lucious Fabius Maximus...
(Jacob)gave a different perspective of the gospel from an outsiders point of view. He is questioning his choices in life, knowing he has his own values and beliefs that are not the same as his peoples.

Great listening , more books by Richard!
This was one that held my attention and I could not wait to get back to listening to it again! I hope Richard Black will write a sequel to this ; all of the characters you learn to love and want to know what happens next in their lives, that makes for the best books ever! Richard Black, please! More books!

Lifetime romance movie meets a wannabe Ben Hur
I really had high hopes for this book. As a Christian who is also a Marine Corps officer, a story about a warrior finding his way to the knowledge of and faith in Jesus seemed like a fascinating tale. It started off pretty good; and there was some interesting period information about the Jews and life back in Biblical times, but as soon as Maximus and his friend landed in Israel, it switched gears for the worse. It suddenly went from the story of a war hardened General and his battle-scared deputy reluctantly taking on this spy mission, to a couple of adult man-children frolicking in the sea of Galilee and then falling in low with a couple of Jewish girls. It was too much yuck for me. There was painfully little about Jesus and their interaction with Him was minimal and from a far. It almost seemed like their affection for these Jewish girls was a major reason they considered belief in Jesus. In fairness, the author did make some effort to present their faith as genuine. Overall, there was absolutely ZERO mystery or thrill to this highly predictable story. I'd skip it unless you are looking for a clean, romance novel with a hint of Jesus in it.

It could have been better…
Very superficial writing both intellectually and linguistically. There is an apparent effort to imitate similar books such as the Robe, Ben-Hur, Spartacus etc with no success whatsoever.

was unaware of the name
I thought this was going to be a Roman soldiers life. I was mistaken once I got about a quarter of the way in. it is such a beautiful story. Has biblical references and a little bit of romance in there. I just couldn't stop listening to this. I reccomend it

For a free book excellent and the narrator 👍
First of all Adam Verner is going on my list of top narrators. He sure can do different character voices.
The story is excellent. Roman soldiers, a general and his friend/second in command sent to Israel to find out about Jesus. My only complaint about the book is that God’s name is Yahoveh not Jehovah. Other than that you can’t go wrong with this book.
