Summary

Hannah Higgins has spent all of her life working for other people, never enjoying a life or a love of her own. And when she is framed and sent to prison for a crime she didn't commit, what little chance she had for happiness seems impossible. With the help of a caring woman, she heads west after her release from prison to start a new life as a mail order bride, but she carries her dark secret with her.

Joel Morgan knows he needs a wife to care for both him and his young daughter, Lucy. So at his sister's urging, he invites Hannah to be his bride. He is won over by her beauty and kindness, and after she bravely thwarts some would-be bandits he finds she has a hidden strength that even she does not recognize. He has fallen in love with this quiet and gentle woman and vows to help break her out of the shroud of sadness that she carries over her.

But the past cannot be hidden forever, and secrets often come out at the most inconvenient times.
