About this listen

All roads lead back home.

Billy Connolly may be a citizen of the world, but in his heart he's never been far from his homeland. Made in Scotland is Billy's unique and intimate portrait of his native Scotland, a love letter to the places and people that made him.

It's an adventure inspired by a single incident: the moment Billy received his Knighthood and was asked, 'How does it feel to have achieved all this when you came from nothing?' His response was, 'But I did come from something!' So begins an odyssey through the Highlands, the Lowlands and the Barrowlands on a shaggy dog quest to find out what that 'something' was and whether it is still there.

Far from a typical travelogue, Billy’s quest is as much through his memories and experiences as it is through his excursions, with a series of key artefacts prompting reminiscences - a first pressing of a Hank Williams album (the first record he ever owned), Landseer’s Monarch of the Glen, a bottle of air that re-creates the smell of the old Glasgow Docks - each of which inspire moments of reflection, joy, drama and laughter.

Accompanying a major BBC TV series, Made in Scotland is Billy Connolly's insightful, moving and very funny account of the stuff that really matters. Family, love, sex, health, football, fishing, work, art, swearing, banjos, friends, going to the pub. And good tea.

Brilliant

It's like a social history of Glasgow, just captivating from start to finish. As a Glaswegian, I could identify with so much of the content on a personal level.

The narrator is very good, but it would have been really special if Billy had narrated the book himself.

Enjoy your history

It took me back to my own Glasgow childhood and memories returned from a former home.
Written in a glaswegian style that is associated with the big yiin.
Well read and enjoyable

Love Billy Connolly

Been brought up with Billy Connellys brilliant brand of humour, observations and stories. Loved every minute. Amazing entertainer and this book rounds it all up. Hopefully not the last we hear from him

great fucking stuff

love hearing Billy, but at least having a Scottish voice there to read this to me has really completed the feel. Billy has a great story to tell, and it's worth every minute reading and listening to it.

The humour.

Once again Billy Connolly has had me chucking away to myself by relating stories about his life. His honest , light-hearted way of talking about the most grim episodes in his life is the work of a genius and always lifts my own mood.
I was disappointed at first that he wasn't reading his book but the narrator did an excellent job and at times I even thought that it was Billy himself. I really enjoyed this book.

Billy is a hero

Thoroughly enjoyed Billy’s encounters from his early shipyard days... summer holidays with his sister and full on humour with his music career... I think I will listen to this again... I laughed so hard... it’s a tonic...

Joy! 100% joy!

You smile, you'll smirk, you may even laugh out loud as I did. A beautiful snapshot of the life and times of the Big Yin.

A brief trip through Billy's life...so far

The header say it all. A lovely meander through some of Billy's proudest and fondest memories.

I liked the narrator. He captures Billy's voice both figuratively and, when quoting him, quite literally too.

I'll gift this to my son. As a pair of proud Socialist Glaswegians, we relate to much of what Billy stands for. In many ways, he is Oor Billy's and he most certainly has a special place in my heart.
