Summary

Samantha Allen, award-winning journalist and author of Real Queer America, delivers an intimate look at the unexpectedly hilarious moments of her gender transition.

In this poignant audio piece, Samantha Allen takes listeners along for the wild ride of her own transition: The good, the bad, but mostly, the funny. Because once she began this life-changing journey in earnest, Samantha realized that while the emotional trials of gender dysphoria and self-discovery could be harrowing, there were so many laugh-out-loud moments along this winding road.

Think about it: While her 20- and 30-something peers were settling into the people they were going to be for the rest of their lives, Samantha was going through puberty all over again, taking the whole womanhood thing step by glamorous step - from learning the differences between men’s and women’s public restrooms to figuring out how to take off a bra without taking her shirt off first. Recognizing these moments of humor brought her joy in times she needed it most - and sharing them, she learned, could be revelatory.

Part deeply personal memoir, part comedic adventure, and part insightful exploration of how gender informs the ways we see the world, M to (WT)F is a delightful listen that proves how powerful it can be to find humor in hardship.

Good for laughs and education

There are funny stories here, but with equal relevance to seriousness. Thank you for your honest and Frank account of your journey Samantha! I think all humans need to hear personal testimonials as to why the world still needs so much to change regarding culture, attitudes and beliefs.

Truly Amazing

This is by far the best book I have listened to on here. thank you Samantha. I ran a bubble bath turned the light to a dim purple and listened to the entire thing. I couldn't stop. its both funny and relatable having started my own transition a few years ago. but although its only been 3 hours and I now look like I'm in my 90's due to my skin sucking up what has to be atleast 25% of the baths capacity, I loved every second of it. now to get out before I become the water and vanish down the drain... look forward to more of Samantha's work. Raven x

I loved this wonderful book

Like Allen's other books, this one is both funny and moving without ever being sentimental or preachy. I have learned so much from her, not least how to cut pizza with scissors, and that-- contrary to what my mother taught me -- hovering is actually an anti-social act. But as well as being informative she demonstrates one of our most important human values: the ability to laugh at ourselves, and with each other.

Allen's books are also important. The humour, warmth and insightfulness of her writing quickly captivate her female audience (I can't speak for the men) by sharing, in a very nail-on-the-head sort of way, the feelings and experiences most of us know well. (Falling in love, for example, or using public bathrooms.) But at the same time, with fluidity and the lightest of touches, she leads her cis gender readers such as myself to a place beyond our own experience, where we can begin to imagine what it might have been like to be born a girl with boy parts. In my view, enabling that sort of empathy with another's experience is what books are FOR. Not many writers can do it with Allen's style and grace.

Brilliant Samantha!

A heart warming tale about Samantha’s life, and coming out story. A candid and funny account giving insight into the world, that is, male to female trans gender.

Great

Let me get the criticism out of the way first.
The whole "Patriarchy" thing.
1. Men are far more likely to be assaulted on the street. I myself have been assaulted twice in my life and I know no male who haven't been assaulted at least once.
Being afraid to walk alone at night is not gender related, but good survival instincts.
2. There is no gender pay gap. Just isn't. Literally no valid evidence for it.
3. As a cis male in mid 30s, I get asked if I have kids ALL the damn time.

Ok, that aside, I loved the book. It was both insightful and funny. I fervently support equality and generally being treated the way you'd want to be treated yourself and I will definitely recommend this book to people who needs to read this.
