About this listen

The extraordinary new novel from the incredible author of Sockpuppet.

Early one Monday morning, much like today, journalist Alex Kubelick walks up to a total stranger and slaps him across the face. Hard.

He thanks her.

They've both just earned Emoticoins in a new, all-consuming game that trades real-life emotions for digital currency.

Emoticoins are changing the face of the global economy - but someone or something seems to be controlling the game for their own nefarious purposes. As Alex begins to pick apart the tangled threads that are holding the virtual game together, she finds herself on the run from very real enemies.

With the world economy teetering on the brink of collapse, it seems there's only one person who might have the answers she seeks. Someone who hides behind the mysterious name Lucky Ghost. But who is Lucky Ghost...and can they really be trusted? And what do they want?

Lucky Ghost is part of the Martingale Cycle, a series of interconnected audiobooks exploring the life of computing pioneer and political radical Elyse Martingale - and her strange afterlife in the 21st century.

A sign of things to come?

If you could sum up Lucky Ghost in three words, what would they be?

Futuristic, dystopin-esque, thrilling

What other book might you compare Lucky Ghost to, and why?

The Feed - based around an example of the constant move towards digital and cyber-technology and the impacts it can have when it gets taken too far.

Which character – as performed by Lucy Paterson – was your favourite?

Alex - tenacious, determined and occasionally gung-ho

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Perhaps the latter moents of the book and the honest exchange between Thimblerig and Alex - the point at which Alex makes a full decision on whether to live in the Strange or The Real

Any additional comments?

Lucky Ghost is a thrilling and fun look at the rise of technology, social media and cryto-currency in the mainstream lives, perhaps not too far removed from reality given that children of three are more at home with an iPad than a pen and pencil these days. combining political corruption, organised crime and hackers, this is a fast moving, tech-focused read that has you engaged in the characters, even if they are not always likeable, invested in their story and, more than anything, intrigued to find out what is going on and what is the true identify of 'Lucky Ghost'. A fantastic read/listen and the audio version is brilliantly narrated and brings the story to life.
