Summary

With Love and Other Scandals, bestselling and RITA Award-winning author Caroline Linden launches a scandalously sexy new historical romance series set in Regency England.

Joan Bennett is a breath away from being a spinster. She’s had four seasons without a suitor. After reading a shockingly sensuous book, Fifty Ways to Sin, Joan decides perhaps it’s time to stop being proper and start being sinful, while she’s still young enough to enjoy it. And what better partner than her brother’s drinking mate, Viscount Burke? He seems the type to know how to give a lady a lascivious adventure.

It seems that the viscount has qualms about trifling with a friend’s sister. That’s the way to end up betrothed. And he doesn’t want that - or does he?

Meh

The story is weak. The heroine is not likeable. Any young woman behaving as she did in the Regency period would have been ostracised. I didn't get past Chapter 3.

Romance with Depth

I found this story of romance to get richer and richer as the plot progressed. Being the first in a series of romances where a scandalously sexual publication plays a role, it introduces the main characters of the series. I didn't start with this one but I wish I had. Nonetheless, it's fine out of order. It's just that the H and h - Tristan and Joan - are so well developed and placed as the first of the cast to come together romantically. The way this story is set apart from a lot of romances is that the plot isn't driven by unbelievably bad judgment calls on the part of the H and h. The air is not filled with long drawn out inner thoughts. The story moves along by character actions and dialog. The romantic arc may follow a common path but it's uncommonly written and I enjoyed being with Joan, Tristan and the supporting characters more and more. The narrator is more than adequate but is not my favorite due to the narrow range of voices. To me it was an overall 5-star production.

Best Caroline Linden so far!

The narrator is absolutely perfect. Not one false note. I hope to hear more of her narrations. I listen at 1.2 speed and I love it.
The characters, the story, the humor - all top notch. I cannot wait to listen to the rest of the series. Highly highly recommended!

Fun Read!!!

I would classify this story as a romantic comedy. I listened to it at the gym on the treadmill and I know some people wondered what I was snickering about. Two unlikely people manage to discover each other in spite of having different personalities. My only wish was that the ending would have been expanded upon more than just the wedding night. Author could have added another chapter or two and finished the story at a ball where the married couple was presented. Anyway, I am reading another one of her books.

Brilliant author and narrator

I adore this author. I’m so many of these HAE / Romance stories they rely on the “chemistry for no reason” to explain attraction. Caroline Linden weaves such delightful tales that it’s clear why anyone would fall in love with these people. The most amazing thing to me is that in each novel the protagonists have different personalities, strengths, weaknesses, etc but she writes them so well.

Enjoyable read

I throughly enjoyed this book. Even though some of Joan's antics were somewhat unbelievable for this time period, I truly enjoyed the the storyline and was able to to escape into another time.

Lovely hopeful story

I loved the story line. I loved how Tristan’s growth and development. The story was great.
I couldn’t deal with the performance. It was like listening to someone who reads nursery rhymes. Sometimes I couldn’t distinguish the voices or the use of pronouns.

Liked it a lot!

Everyone loves a story of a rake reforming because he falls in love with a woman! I liked it too because her mother was wrong and a prejudiced person, her father was easygoing, her aunt had been scandalous the main woman character when she was young, the main woman character was feisty, stubborn, argumentative, sexy and thoughtful! The main male character had his freedom, yes, but he had not been loved as a child and did not know how being loved felt. Therefore he, at first, led his life as a "rake", not knowing any better. But the woman did understand him, because she has been a wallflower most of her life, and thought of herself as ugly. It was a good book because the characters did make mistakes, but still tried to be better!
