Summary

Updated and Expanded Edition of the Leadership Best Seller

Harness the meaning of love, the verb, to improve your corporate culture and bottom line with the help of Joel Manby, former President and CEO of both SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment and Herschend Enterprises.

Joel won the respect of America with his appearance on the CBS reality TV series Undercover Boss. A highly successful corporate executive, Joel Manby is unlike most other CEOs. As the 18 million viewers of Undercover Boss witnessed, Manby has a unique style of leadership - servant leadership - which has a profound impact on his employees.

In this updated and expanded edition of Love Works, Manby demonstrates that leading with love is effective even in extremely difficult business environments, which he experienced at SeaWorld. With an all-new introduction and two additional chapters, Manby shares more of his own leadership and personal stories, giving insight that will help you become a more effective leader by:

  • Cultivating a culture that builds improved employee engagement and long-term success
  • Outlining seven time-proven principles that break down the natural walls within the workplace
  • Overcoming personal failures at work and home
  • Empowering your managers and employees
  • Disarming difficulties in the workplace

Discover the truth of the power of love to change the course of your business and your life today!

A new view on business leadership

I learned so much in this book how to lead an organization with love without losing sight of necessary corporate goals. Joel uses a lot of personal examples from his impressive careers which is very helpful understanding the concept. I highly recommend this book to anyone is leadership positions

Prepare for late chapters Christian Evangelism

The first roughly 10 chapters provide excellent insight into effective management strategies. But, I was very disappointed how outwardly faith-focused the final chapters became. If this will bother you, as it did me, skip the last 2 chapters. They are more of a summary than anything and spend way too much time trying to convince listeners of Christian teachings.

A pillar of truth that always withstands the test of time!

Well written and foundationally stands far and above any other self-help book out there! “Where selfish ambition & jealousy exists brings disorder and every vile thing.” If love is profitable for all eternity, why wouldn’t it be in the workplace? If every business (including government) adopted these principles, this country would no longer find itself divided, but rather prosperous, content and happy.

Beneficial

Admire the author’s courage to share some deep personal and emotional stories that can happen when the DO Goals become more important than the BE Goals. Making promotion, growth, position, title etc more important than values, relations, teamwork etc can be lead to disaster. It can destroy the relationship with those closest and dearest. I rank this book 5 out of 5.

Refreshingly practical and stories that bring to life

This book has practical insights for becoming a better leader. I’m already using nuggets in my own leadership and the leaders I mentor.

I am blown away with Joel’s story. He’s achieved some of the highest levels of success this world has to offer, and he models humility so well.

Great read!

As an enneagram type 2, this book was profoundly helpful to me. Too many books tell you what to do and aren’t candid enough to tell you how the author failed, messed up, and persevered in their field. The trick now is to apply it.
