Summary

L’opera al nero è la storia di un personaggio immaginario, Zenone, medico, alchimista, filosofo, dalla nascita illegittima a Bruges nei primi anni del Cinquecento fino alla sua drammatica morte nel 1569. Il racconto lo segue nei suoi viaggi attraverso l’Europa e il Levante, lo vede all’opera nell’esercizio della medicina e nella ricerca scientifica, sempre in anticipo sui tempi. Sovversivo, visionario, umano, Zenone si muove tra una folla di umanità di ogni livello e condizione, offrendo, attraverso i suoi occhi, un’ampia visione della società del tempo. E rappresentando così la sintesi dell’uomo rinascimentale e del passaggio tra Medio Evo ed età moderna.
