Let down by the narrator

If I had read some previous reviews before purchasing, I would have been prepared for the dreadful narration of this story. The constant rise towards the end of sentences became so distracting that I almost gave up after the first chapter. However, I persevered and must have become more tollerant although I do think a grittier narrator is required for this story. The plot was ok with several twists and turns but I found parts very repetative and weak. Overall, an ok thriller read by an irritating narrator.

Reasonable story but irritating narration

Overall I enjoyed this story. However, I had figured it out right from the opening so none of the twists had any effect for me. It's a shame really because I felt the author came on too strong in one area and so the twists never changed my mind. Having said that, I did enjoy the story and it wasn't ruined by knowing the secret.

Unfortunately, I found the narration monotonous and irritating. She's good with accents and voices in short dialogue, but for any lengthy dialogue or prose her voice repeats the same intonation for each sentence. I almost didn't continue listening at the beginning because it was so irritating and distracting. A real shame.

Just average & a little plodding

I wish that the main character did a little less thinking & that there was more actually going on. The narrator's voice really grated.

Spoiled by the narration

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The reader

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?

no

Was Look Behind You worth the listening time?

The story was enough to make me cringe through the narration but only just....

Any additional comments?

From the start the rising tone of every sentence drove me crazy ! It was a relief when other characters were introduced just to get a different tone. I almost gave up but the story was interesting enough to make me persist to the end.

listened to this in one sitting because its a gripping audiobook. from the start it had its hooks in me even though i had guessed the monster who done the deed so to speak. The narrator had a beautiful voice too which soothed me. all in all a great audible buy. very happy

Gripping psychological tale

Would you listen to Look Behind You again? Why?

Exciting and realistic story. I wouldn't listen again because knowing the outcome would spoil it.

What did you like best about this story?

Chloe 'acted' her part very well and you were made to feel a great deal of sympathy for her but the listener was never sure whether she was deluded or not until the last chapter.

Have you listened to any of Susan Duerden’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Great sympathy for Chloe - near to tears.

Any additional comments?

Hope she has some more great books like this one.
