Summary

The Wolf is roaming the city in this Bram Stoker award-winning tale, and he must be stopped.

Grim Marie knows far too much about the wolves of the world, a world where little girls go missing. After all, she had married one before she/he showed his claws, and what that wolf did to her little girl was unforgiveable. Grim Marie isn't certain if she can ever forgive herself for putting her Little Aleta in harm's way.

When Grandmother becomes ill, Aleta offers to take the bus through the concrete forest to Grandmother's house to bring her some goodies. She knows the way. What could possibly go wrong?

In this modern day retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf takes to the city streets to capture his prey, but the hunter is close behind him. With Grim Marie on the prowl, the hunter becomes the hunted. Wolves pad through the darkest kind of fairytale: one that can come true.

Harsh Reality Meets Dark Fairy Tale

Would you consider the audio edition of Little Dead Red to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version of this novella but Joe Hempel does an exceptional job at keeping you absorbed in the narrative.

What other book might you compare Little Dead Red to, and why?

It's hard to compare Little Dead Red to other books out there because Mercedes' style is a trend setter. If pushed, I would have to say that you won't be disappointed if you like Lauren Beukes' grittiness coupled with Neil Gaiman's imagery.

What about Joe Hempel’s performance did you like?

Joe has a very subtle way of drawing you so deeply into the story that makes it hard to stop listening. He is able to take each one of Mercedes' unique character and give them equally unique voices in a way that makes it seem effortless.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

With it being a novella-length story, it can easily be listened to in one sitting. Mercedes' almost poetic and often whimsical style coupled with Joe's ability to draw you into the tale makes this a story I will likely go back to again and again.

Dark and unsettling but very well done.

The descriptions and use of language are unique but very fitting with the tone of the story. Mercedes M. Yardley has crafted a well written this story it is an interesting listen you are never quite sure where the book is going until the very end.

Joe Hempel does a great job pulling the listener into the words making both the worlds and the characters seem real. I would happily listen to any books narrated by Joe Hempel.

Do not listen to this if you want to feel warm or happy. Evil and insanity can be found inside. Despite how short this book is It took me a long time to listen to as it is somewhat unsettling as it evokes emotion in the listener and it is a chilling believable tale of something that could happen.

If you listen to this (and it is very well done) have something happy and lighthearted on hand in case of needing a break.

Beautiful and horrific tale

What did you like most about Little Dead Red?

The language and the style of writing adopted by Yardley. Despite the harrowing subject matter, she delivers it in a compelling and entertaining way.

What did you like best about this story?

It is an emotionally charged story, expertly written by Yardley and narrated by Hempel to the maximum effect, drawing the listener in to the plight of the protagonist and her quest. The characters are fully realised. Yardley's prose is lyrical and beautiful while Hempel hits all the right emotive notes.

Have you listened to any of Joe Hempel’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Die Dog or Eat The Hatchet (written by Adam Howe) which I felt Hempel delivered very well. With Little Dead Red, he has shown that he can take on stories of very different subject matter and deliver an excellent narration no matter the story, style or protagonist.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Without giving too much away, when it is revealed that Marie has made a mistake about the identity of the wolf she is seeking. Harrowing.
