Summary

When a young woman shows up dead in Campus Creek, amateur sleuth Pepper Brooks is warned not to get involved. She's fine with that. It's her final quarter of college, and she's immersed in Hemingway and planning her future. Plus, things are already complicated enough trying to figure out where everything stands with Alex, her maybe-boyfriend.

But when two more fair-haired women show up drowned, Pepper literally can't stay away. Especially when her best friend may be the next one For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Listeners, this is the second book in a literary-themed cozy series. If you ever feel inclined to quote classic literature, sniff books when no one is looking, and think dogs are a girl's best friend - right up there with a good book - you're going to love Pepper and her Pine Crest friends. And if Hemingway's not your jam, no worries, each book features a different classic author. ;) Happy listening!

Pepper Brooks is at it again

Pepper Brooks is at it again on the trail of a killer and I am loving it. I have listened to book one and jumped at the chance to listen to book two. Glad I did because it was just as fun. I really like the characters especially Pepper and her best friend or as she likes to be called sexy Watson. Although I might not have got all the literally quotes it was fun to listen to as Pepper worked out who the killer was and I enjoyed the mystery because there was plenty of suspects. I hope more of the series is going to be released on audible because I want to see how things change for Pepper and her friends now that the final year of university is over.
When a young woman is found dead in the creek Pepper has no intention of investigating, even if everybody tells her a secret about the dead girl in confidence she points them in the direction of the police. It is only after a second blond girl is found dead in water that Pepper begins to suspect more than just a serial killer is roaming the campus. The deaths are connected but how? Is it like the campus newspaper suggests and someone is showing just how dangerous the water on campus is and is everyone in danger? Or is it just blond girls having affairs that is the trigger? The police start to narrow he suspects down to two possibles but with a third body found Pepper has no choice but to run her own investigation because the police are looking in the wrong direction and aren't listening to her. Pepper thinks she know why the girls are chosen she just needs to work out who the killer is before he targets her very own Sexy Watson aka her blond best friend.
I liked the narrator, she has a really distinct voice that she puts to good use. There was a slight problem with sound, where it would go soft at the start of a few chapters and then return to normal , not enough to stop you listening but I did pick up on it a few times.

Clever

Literary references abound in this murder mystery. It is very cleverly plotted so it's very difficult to guess the killer too early in the book. A few red herrings along the way meant that I was completely taken by surprise when the penny finally dropped at the end.
I loved the little group of university friends and I look forward to reading more about them in the next mystery.
