Summary

From NY Times and USA Today best-selling author Jana DeLeon, the second book in the Miss Fortune mystery series.

No one in Sinful liked Pansy Arceneaux, but who hated her enough to kill her?

When aspiring actress Pansy Arceneaux returns to Sinful, Louisiana, to head up the beauty pageant portion of the Summer Festival, CIA assassin Fortune Redding knows she's in for trouble. Her undercover identity as a former beauty queen makes Fortune the perfect choice to chair the event with Pansy, but Pansy's abrasive personality makes it impossible to get through a single rehearsal without a fight. When Pansy turns up dead, Fortune is the prime suspect.

Armed with only her wits and two conniving seniors referred to locally as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune launches an investigation to find the real killer before her cover is blown.

Nowhere Near As Good As the First

I loved the first book in this series and therefore swiftly moved on to book 2. Unfortunately this installment is nowhere near as well crafted as the first. There are some strange contrivances and plot points - for example Fortune is played as having a total lack of knowledge of pop culture and media. This is played for "laughs" but is so extreme it's bizarre - this is someone who is meant to be able to go undercover. In the first book she was fleeing breaking her cover as a criminal's girlfriend - how exactly could she do this without any knowledge of what "regular" people her age know and like? It felt forced and silly. The plot is also weaker and personally, I saw the murderer coming from pretty far away (unlike in the first novel). The narration is great and the character voices feel on point (though the narrator does have some strange pronunciations). I persevered with the series and the next book does get better so possibly this one was more rushed?

Excellent.

I think this is the most entertaining series of books I’ve listened so far, since the Lady Hardcastle series. I really liked this book and found it even funnier than the first & it made me lol on several occasions. I will be buying the next in the series.

Another Laugh-out-loud story!

This author is fast becoming a favourite! I love the slow crawl of interest between Fortune and the Deputy but even more than that I love Gerdie and Ida Belle. They are amazing! On to the next adventure!

Fun

A properly plotted detective mystery with plenty of fun and ‘wicked deeds’. I thoroughly enjoy this series. 🙂

Don't turn your back

This book was so funny at times it had me laughing out loud . Four absolutely brilliant lady characters spread mayhem and discover murder in their midst. Overall a good interesting story with a surprise ending. Good back up characters also make up the quality of the book.

fantastic

I love the Miss Fortune mysteries, the only problem is people think I am nuts. I listen while I am out and they make me laugh out loud. Well never mind, they are worth it.

Great characters and story

Really enjoyed the first book and this one followed in great style. Great plot; fabulous characters and glimpses of humour too. What more do you need?
