Summary

Gripping but much more

With a wealth of compelling detail this important novel holds your attention from the first chapter to the last. It also creates a vivid image of a dysfunctional society. The wreckage of an industrial past provides the background for emotionally damaged individuals trying to make sense of themselves, their imperfections and their mistakes. Amid the contusion and evil however they find the innate strength to struggle for a better life for themselves and others. As W. H. Auden wrote "you shall love your crooked neighbour with your crooked heart".
