About this listen

Serial killers never retire. They just go on hiatus. The urge to kill is always there, bubbling below the surface.

Billy and Charlie thought their killing days were behind them. They used to be prolific life-takers, but old age finally caught up with them. Now they are ending their days in a dismal nursing home in Blackpool, with only their memories to keep them going. Memories of murder and mutilation.

But when Archie turns up at the home, everything changes. Archie is a breath of fresh air, and he puts new life into Billy and Charlie—and before long, they realise that it's time to start killing again.

Ignore the Covid denialists who, in their rush to object to any mention of the virus's part in history, have willfully missed the point about the elderly being neglected during the pandemic. Stephen Leather's wearisome politics notwithstanding, it's an entertaining read. With a little plot planning he might have managed a more satisfying ending, though.

An entertaining read

Narrator excellent...got fed up with use of squire etc and old folk talk....however disturbing content was in my opinion brave...many authors don't go far enough.....so that is a plus even if uncomfortable to hear. And political view 're police intake eventually becoming only trans...asian..gay ....disabled etc made me smile...but is true!

Worth a listen

Great story as always but just way to heavy on covid! the repeat descriptions of ppe did get somewhat tedious.
paul thornly did an awesome job as ever

To much covid!

Huge Stephen leather fan but this must mention masks snd anti Covid equipment too many times. Breaking up the story with needless repetitive detail. Other than that pretty good but not anywhere near his best. Read brilliantly as always by Paul Thornley

Far from his best

This book is a absolute masterpiece.
I’ve listened 5 times now already and could honestly listen to this again.
The balance of characters is perfectly matched to complement a most intriguing and exciting story.
The twists and turns within the plot really do keep you on the edge of your seat.
Thank you Stephen for another brilliant masterpiece.
Thank you also Paul for your also brilliant narration.

James

I listened to this book in just over a day
Serial killers living in a nursing home is a great setting for this book and at times the dialogue between them is laugh out loud funny and other times the tension is so good my heart was racing
There are so many twist and turns and I did not see a major one
Highly recommended

One of the best Stephen Leather books

This was the most novel story that I have encountered in years. I always enjoy Stephen Leather books and Paul Thornley is the most accomplished narrator whose command of accents and delivery is superb. The most amazing thing about this book is the plot and the characters, how can these people be at times funny and entertaining and likeable despite their crimes? The attention to detail and the obvious knowledge of the care home system and the Covid tragedy was spot on. The Blackpool location was expertly explored.
A disturbing plot but expertly delivered and some enjoyable unexpected twists.

Stephen Leather and Paul Thornley Master Class

Not my cup of tea - prefer the active specialist cop / Special services stories better. Easy listening though

Easy listening but misses the usual intensity
