Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A gripping and explosive account of Vladimir Putin's tyranny, charting his rise from spy to tsar, exposing the events that led to his invasion of Ukraine and his assault on Europe.

In Killer in the Kremlin, award-winning journalist John Sweeney takes listeners from the heart of Putin's Russia to the killing fields of Chechnya, to the embattled cities of an invaded Ukraine.

In a disturbing exposé of Putin's sinister ambition, Sweeney draws on thirty years of his own reporting—from the Moscow apartment bombings to the atrocities committed by the Russian Army in Chechnya, to the annexation of Crimea and a confrontation with Putin over the shooting down of flight MH17—to understand the true extent of Putin's long war.

Drawing on eyewitness accounts and compelling testimony from those who have suffered at Putin's hand, we see the heroism of the Russian opposition, the bravery of the Ukrainian resistance, and the brutality with which the Kremlin responds to such acts of defiance, assassinating or locking away its critics, and stopping at nothing to achieve its imperialist aims.

In the midst of one of the darkest acts of aggression in modern history—Russia's invasion of Ukraine—this book shines a light on Putin's rule and poses urgent questions about how the world must respond.

Investigative journalism at it’s best

John Sweeney is a true and brave man stepping on all the wrong toes to get the truth out to the listener (or reader) in balanced and sometimes in-your-face content. Face-slapping-ly good.

Refunded. Couldn't stand the narration.

Another prime example of why authors should stick to writing, and hire a professional to narrate. Couldn't stand the voice and ended up refunding less than 30 minutes in.

Confirmation of what we know.

Sweeney is a good reminder of what a good journalist can and used to be. Independent and not in the throws of client journalism that characterises most of what we see today.

Great insights into personal experiences and into the politics of broadcasting esp BBC and how commercial interests are starting to push against journalistic integrity. As well as interesting insights into Sweeneys personal experiences particularly as a thorn in Putin's side.

Most or much of what you hear is not new if you follow news and Sweeney. Perhaps adds detail in places where gaps exist. But not ground breaking on new grounds. An affirmation of what we think of a modern authoritarian rather than an exposure. Still good to have people write and retell stories where many journalists are chilled by UK litigious courts around journalistic integrity by the rich.

Well worth the listen, irreverential and pure Sweeney. Good listen

Poor journalism badly written

Just like reading the gutter press - full of titillating assertions, assumptions and innuendos not based on proven facts; and the author’s emotions and prejudices keep coming through. It is highly likely that much of what the author is saying is actually true, but I much prefer credible fact based journalism than this poor quality writing that would have a better home in News of the World.

Scary!

Very “enjoyable” if that’s the right word. Corruption is one of the scariest things in the world.

Fact or fiction….or perhaps faction?

Used ‘faction’ above cos I was impressed by author’s use of schizofascist!! Really enjoyed the book either way, but not sure how to figure it’s provenance or credibility, but even if it’s half true, it’s scary!!

Brilliant.

Brilliant and insightful. If there were more journalists prepared to go that extra mile, the world would be a less corrupt place...
Brilliantly narrated by the man himself, this book/read is a page turner and hard to put down.

Excellent, fascinating, important.

A superb, if sometimes terrifying study of Putin and the danger he poses. Thank you, Mr Sweeney.

Love John Sweeny but enough with the accents

I really wish people would stick to what they are good at.

John Sweeny is an awesome investigative journalist - but I wish he had just read the story without feeling that he has to do all of the accents along the way. Luke Harding just reads his stuff and its much more enjoyable.

At least the chapters have descriptions - too many books just have chapter numbers - really lazy and makes it really hard to dip on and out of .

Waiting for the sequel!

Very well written and read. Waiting for the sequel, hopefully it will be written once this war is over, Ukraine is victorious and Putin is gone.
