Summary

I'm the girl you'll never see coming.

Blink and you're dead - another target checked off my list.

But one night, everything in my carefully ordered existence falls apart. A bloodbath and a car crash later, I find myself in the grasp of four gorgeous, intimidating men.

Are my captors cops, like they claim, or something far more sinister? They sure know how to bend the law. And seeing how skillfully they handle a gun or a knife, I can't help wondering what their hands would feel like all over me.

But I have vengeance to wreak, and no man, no matter how powerful, is going to keep me caged for long.

They think they've caught a wounded little mouse. How could they know they've brought a killer into their home?

I'll bide my time, learn all I can, and when I'm ready to strike...

They'll never know what hit them.

Killer Beauty is the first in a new gritty contemporary romance series from best-selling author Eva Chase (writing as Eva Chance) and Harlow King. No major triggers, just hot murderously inclined men, a deadly heroine out for revenge, and an enemies-to-lovers romance where the girl gets all the guys. Prepare for total bloody chaos!

Great new series

Dess is strong she’s been conditioned that way to do the dirty work of the syndicate who stole her away from her parents when she was very young. The interaction with her and the guys was great especially Talon 🤤 and I’m looking forward to finding answers in book two. The narration by Vanessa and Stephen was perfect .

Intriguing Start to The Series

I'll start my review by saying that this book was nothing like I was expecting. Firstly, it's an enemy to lovers story which only had one intimate scene. Secondly, Dess the female lead is an assassin but in some ways, she's so unaware of the real world that said once I started listening to this one I just couldn't stop.

The five main players in this story are the four guys who make up The Chaos Crew, a team of hired killers led by Julius, Garrison's the people person as he can change his persona at will, Talon's the strong and silent muscle, and Blaze, the computer wizard, each of these guys can kill without remorse but they never kill the innocent. Then there's Decima aka Dess, an assassin who has lived her whole life locked away in a concealed room, in the mansion hidden from the world and only permitted to leave her room to carry out her kills. She's been told that it's her job to protect the members of "the household" who live in the mansion but then one night she finds herself suddenly freed from her room by Anna, her only friend in the household, Anna's bleeding and dying and tells Dess to leave the mansion and find safety. When she leaves her wing of the mansion she discovers that every member of the household is dead, all savagely murdered. She grabs some cash and jewellery and flees the mansion vowing to herself to find whoever did this and get vengeance for her family.

The Chaos Crew are keeping an eye on the mansion to make sure everything has gone according to plan when they pick up Dess on one of the cameras they don't know if she's from the mansion, she wasn't on the manifest of people to be killed but did she see them? They decide to follow her and find out especially when they see her steal a car.

When Dess crashes the car she finds herself saved or should that be kidnapped by four men, she wakes to find herself in a room unharmed apart from the injuries suffered in the car crash and is told that the four guys are undercover police officers, but are they who they say they are?

What follows is a story full of intrigue, danger, lies, drama and many twists and turns, Can the guys trust her? Should she trust the guys? Is anything she's been led to believe her whole life true? This book does end with a shocking eye-opening cliffhanger one, I for one, didn't see coming. Thank goodness book two is already available because I cant wait to find out what happens next!

The narration of this book by Vanessa Moyen and Stephen Dexter is very well done and certainly added to my enjoyment of this intriguing story.

I was given this audiobook as a gift and have voluntarily written this review.

Action and mystery from start to finish!

A fabulous new series! Dark, compelling, and will keep you guessing. This story hits the ground running with action and mystery right from the start. I love that it kept me engaged and guessing the whole time! The characters are fabulously written and well-defined, which only adds to the amazing world that these authors are building. I can't wait to find out where the story leads next!

I give the narration 5/5 stars, they definitely bring the story to life and help you really get immersed in it!

Kill Beauty

Omg I loved every bit of this book and can't wait for more. Like out of all things the people she is trying to find that killed her people, are the guys she is staying with. But are those guys maybe safer for her to be with, than the people she grew up knowing.

God, this is boring.

On chapter 10 or 12 and I’m ready to stab my eyes out.

Returning it now.

Not the greatest book

Just couldn’t get into this story. The character development was good but there was no chemistry between the main female and her 4 cop imposter captors. In fact there’s nothing even remotely passionate, romantic or sexual in this book. It’s mostly just the main characters trying to figure out each other’s real motivation and their place in a serial murder at a strange mansion. It had potential but feel flat early on.

Good first book in this new series

I was definitely interested in this new series by this author duo past on other reads/listens I have of theirs and I was not disappointed. In this new series, we get to see how a serial killer crew handles finding their missed mark without even knowing it and both sides keeping their real selves secret from the other. It was definitely fun to see the cat and mouse game between them all, and elicited small smiles from me when they were missing the major clues/werent putting 2 and 2 together (its fun when the reader knows and waits to see how everything unfolds).

In terms of the story, I thought it was gripping enough to want me to know more. I will say I didnt connect with the main character as much as I have with others from these authors (individually or in cowrites). I think it was more her personality and lack of social cues maybe, but it sometimes felt disjointed and I in turn didnt connect and root for her like normally do. I think the guys were standoffish (for good reason) so you don't get to see their real personalities come out in book 1. They needed to be guarded (for their jobs and they had a complete stranger living with them and she was sketchy haha). Again, I get why the characters were like this and it sets up the series really well (currently listening to book 2 and I like it so much more). I loved seeing some of the cracks show up (very minutely) in book 1. Talon was a huge surprise for me, I think he is my favorite. I usually go for characters like Blaze, but Talon won me over with knitting haha. And he seems like he would be a total teddy bear and the best head on his shoulders to be honest. I was shocked by some of the turn of events as we got further into the plot, they added more nuance and complications to Des' relationships and characterization, that's for sure. Definitely would recommend this series, I am very interested to see where the authors take it (more to come in Book 2's review later this week).

In terms of the narration, I actually was leaning towards a 3.5-4 stars on this one, which is a shocker based on what these 2 narrators have done in the past. They are some of my favorites but I think some of the voices missed the mark for me. I was continuously shocked why Blaze's voice sounds similar to Des's. You can be a slimmer/hacker guy without sounding feminine. I get Talon would have the gruffer-sounding voice, but I was disappointed with Blaze's portrayal (still an issue in book 2) - this was by both narrators. I think also the male narration made Des sound more whiny than she should have sounded. Its a problem some male narrators have with doing female impersonations. It wasn't all the time, but enough to make me notice. I rounded it up to 4 stars for narration because I think when the narrators were spot-on, they were fabulous and made the characters come to life, but there were too many instances where they took me out of the story with their voice choices.

Love it!

Oh my goodness! Two of my favorite narrators in the same audiobook makes for a happy listener. The fact that it is an amazing book makes it so much better. I love this world that the authors have created. It was difficult to stop listening to it once I started it and I finished it in a day because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I need the next book ASAP!
