Summary

A private server. A digital playground. An alliance of the world's most sadistic, most depraved minds. A place to bring their prey, to hone their skills.

Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. Survival horror. One of the most brutal, most terrifying full-immersion games ever made. A place where fantasy characters such as elves and dwarves clash with technology, where giant monsters roam the hills, entrusted with protecting the gates of heaven from the demons who would tear it all down.

A game where one plays the last of the battlefield surgeons: a healer tasked with keeping the behemoths alive at all costs.

But on this server, they don't care about the game. That's not why they're here. They've come because of the game's most unique feature: full pain. Realistic anatomy. The ability to bring their victims well beyond the body's normal breaking point. And most importantly, the ability to bring them back and do it all over again.

Trapped in a bloody, merciless nightmare, Duke only has one goal: to survive. And in order to survive, he must play the game. He must win the game. And to do that, he must become the most cruel, most ruthless monster of them all.

This is too much. This... is too much.

This book goes to some really dark places. It's a good book, hence the five stars but...

I would not recommend it to someone else. Mainly because that person might think there was something wrong with me.

But I guess I liked it?

It is well written.

Sadistic

Great voice actor. The sadistic nature of the story is not for me. If u wanted my skin to crawl, great, you succeeded.

great concept, not so great execution

while the story sounds like a great concept the writing and vocal work leaves a little to be desired.

some things that should be short are too long, some things that should have greater detail and length are almost skipped over altogether.

it held my attention for the most part but it was frequently hard work.

excellent

the last 20 minutes or so really let it down, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed KBS :)

Convoluted

I liked the long and convoluted story threads. They keep the story running like the blood through the vanes of this odd organism of a story. I disliked the pseudo-religeous aspects overlayed with cyber science-fiction. Some "gory" aspects also feel artificial and forced. I liked the difference to a lot of existing literature. The whole story feels like swimming through syrupy lead with no relief.

disappointing after DCC

Picked this up after dungeon crawler carl, story and narration are just not even close to that level so was a disappointment. Story felt like cruelty aspects were shoehorned in rather than feeling like a natural progression. Narration was a let down also. Shame

Meh

Didn’t finish. Nowhere near as good as their other work. It was too fast getting into the “game world” and building up the consequences that I didn’t care about the MC at all. The female lead character seemed thrown in as an antagonist and then suddenly turned around to working with them.

Dark, original and intentionally fucked up.

A VR book with actual consequence, unlike 99% of books in the genre that use VR as a backdrop.
Not the most positive book and has references to things like self harm, torture and lots of general disgusting scenes but is somehow very lighthearted at times, I'd recommend it even if you are put off by that sort of thing as it is such a unique read.
