Summary
The Sunday Times number one best seller!
What if winning means losing everything?
It’s the stuff dreams are made of – a lottery win so big, it changes everything.
For 15 years, Lexi and Jake have played the same six numbers with their friends, the Pearsons and the Heathcotes. Over dinner parties, fish & chip suppers and summer barbecues, they’ve discussed the important stuff – the kids, marriages, jobs and houses – and they’ve laughed off their disappointment when they failed to win anything more than a tenner.
But then, one Saturday night, the unthinkable happens. There’s a rift in the group. Someone doesn’t tell the truth. And soon after, six numbers come up which change everything forever.
Lexi and Jake have a ticket worth £18 million. And their friends are determined to claim a share of it.
Number one Sunday Times best seller Adele Parks returns with a riveting look at the dark side of wealth in this gripping take on friendship, money and betrayal - and good luck gone bad....
Critic reviews
"Adele Parks never takes her foot off the gas, every book is tighter, faster, better than the last. Just My Luck is a gripping story of greed, lies and dark family secrets. I read it in a two-day frenzy." (Lisa Jewell)
"A compelling take on one of those “what if” scenarios that we’ve all wondered about. Addictive, provocative and thoroughly relatable – a brilliantly crafted reminder to be careful what you wish for’ TM Logan ‘An absolute joy: gripping, shocking and surprising. A cautionary tale about what one couple’s sudden wealth can do to old friendships." (Jane Fallon)
"Stupendous! I read this totally compelling modern-day morality tale over a weekend – I couldn’t put it down. As ever, Adele Parks does not disappoint – you’ll love it." (Ruth Jones)

Very disappointing
A very disappointing book from an author I normally enjoy. I stopped listening very early on as the story was slow to get going, the characters unlikeable, and the narration annoying. Will be returning this one. Would not recommend.

Obnoxious Characters
I have 40mins left of this and I don't think I can bear much longer. Tried to persevere and give it a chance but the characters are awful and obnoxious, especially the daughter. I don't know if it's the narration or character... Maybe both but the daughter is unbearable to listen to. Have enjoyed Adele Parks' previous books but this one has been a tiresome chore to get through.

Great storytelling
Imagine winning the lottery, a lifelong dream come true. You would feel like the luckiest family on earth... wouldn’t you?
Morally upright Lexi along with her husband Jake and children, Emily and Logan, has won almost 18 million on the lottery. After a bit of wrangling and dispute with a syndicate that has only recently stopped Jake and the children seem to be trying to spend as much as possible on whatever their hearts desire - Lexi seems less affected by it and still looks to do some good for others from her windfall.
The story that started as a tale of good luck and joy unfolds into something altogether deeper and darker. It flows through greed, jealousy, betrayal and morals on the twisty road to it’s conclusion. I couldn’t stop listening. I loved Lexi, but loathed Jake and really wanted Lexi and her family to to have a happy ending. All the main characters were portrayed well and it gave you a real sense of who they were as people - be that good or bad!
I won’t give away anything about the book overall but will say the final chapter really was rhe icing on a deliciously extravagant cake for me. I never even gave a thought to this particular scenario.
Love Adele’s books - they just get better and better. This has been one of my favourites so far. Great narrator too really helped bring the book to life.

A parable for our times, a lockdown lesson
No problem with the narration, although Lexi does come over as slower and more flat than everyone else. Maybe that is her character... Some of the men spoken by the women narrators come across as rough and gruff, but that is ever the way with women audible readers speaking male parts.
The story is hugely involving and exciting. Dreams coming true turn out to be nightmares - be careful what you wish for! Corruption explodes and is exposed in the least likely places - eventually. Wow, this kept me amused for days, although I wanted so much to find out what happened, that I often slept through chapters late at night and had to reverse.
I was at first confused by the forewords and the involvement of Tomas from Moldava. When all clears up I appreciated that apparent sideline was the lynchpin of the story. I loved Logan Lexi's son most, he was transparently good and honest which is more than I can say for the majority of the other characters! Tremendous twist at the endoblast paragraphs left me mulling this over for ages. Clever...

Easy to read story - narration and editing poor
The storyline was interesting as winning the lottery is something we all think/talk about at some point or another. The narrator of Lexi’s part however was awful. Far too wooden and stilted. Lines were read twice in many places - makes you wonder if any quality assurance is ever done on narration and editing. Enough to make me consider returning for poor quality editing halfway through. Performance of other characters was good however.

Disappointed!!
A good plot but this book could have been so much better. Poorly written with weak frustrating characters.
The narrator read with absolutely no enthusiasm, as if she was being forced to narrate against her will!!

Fantastic Read
Fantastic and exciting ready. Lots of twists and turns, not my normal type of read but the narrator was easy to listen to and had me gripped.
Made me think, if I won the lottery what would I be like.

Disappointed
I short story dragged out to a book by pointless detail, the characters irritated me and the writing style was had me skipping bits to get to the point of the chapter.
