Summary

Librarian Syd Murphy flees the carnage of a failed marriage by accepting an 18-month position in Jericho - a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. Her plans to hide out and heal her wounds fall by the wayside as she gets drawn into the daily lives of the quirky locals. She becomes fast friends with Maddie Stevenson, the enigmatic physician who has returned to the backcountry community to take over her late father's medical practice. Together they learn that life and love can have as many twists and turns as a country road.

A real treat and MUST have!

What did you like most about Jericho?

I can truly say I loved it all but most of all, the journey of Syd and Maddie and their path they found to each other, the friendships formed and on a personal note, for me the acceptance that came for Syd from her family. If that isn't enough of an emotional journey (and frustrating at times - in a good way), the friendships, humour (laugh out loud so don't be surprised if people start looking at you funny :-P) and other characters like David, Michael and all the other residents of Jericho will absolutely make you stay tuned until the end......you will want more!!!! The narrator is also excellent and really brings the story to life.

What other book might you compare Jericho to, and why?

Snow Falls, from Gerri Hill. Similar journey to Syd and Maddie. A journey of meeting your should and life partner, the questions it raised about what you thought you knew about yourself and the joys of what happens next...

Have you listened to any of Christine Williams’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes, Aftermath, which is the follow up from Jericho and another MUST HAVE! As always she reads very well, really takes you on a journey through the book. The emotion that comes across in her voice when excitement, joy and sadness happens, really makes the characters come alive and pulls you in to the story. I have also just started listening to Hoosier Daddy and already cant stop listening.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

ABSOLUTELY! The humour is fantastic, you cant help but laugh out loud. Due to the book being so well written and narrated, you cant help but shed a tear every now and then and off course share in the joys of all the good stuff happening as well.

Any additional comments?

Overall Jericho was a fantastic book to listen to. The characters and their development is really wonderful. The journey of Syd and Maddie, absolutely beautiful and their lives entwined with all the characters in Jericho is a real treat. I don't want to give the plot away but all and all at the end I had to have more and went to buy Aftermath, the follow up to Jericho, immediately after.

Arch, Preachy, ghastly

Oh good grief, what a nauseating book. Saccharine characters delivering clogging, witless banter in a fog of lesbian innuendo. I’ve never met such wet gay people. Or, indeed, straight people. Add an over-described, over-cliched American small town setting and you have pretty much my idea of hell. Exchanged it after 4 interminable chapters.

pent up frustration, anxiety much!!!

If you could sum up Jericho in three words, what would they be?

funny, heart stopping, anxiety

What other book might you compare Jericho to, and why?

i cant seem to find any other book to compare this one to for some reason.

Which character – as performed by Christine Williams – was your favourite?

I loved Maddie. She is so funny, determined and loving. i love the way how she stuck to not making a move on a straight woman as she didn't want to scare Sid off. Even when Sid finally made a move she was determined not to rush anything.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

drive a woman crazy

Any additional comments?

must say this book had me cursing morning noon and night. I was on edge waiting to see when the hell one of them would make a move.

Wonderful banter!

Where does Jericho rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have listened to too many audio books to rank that. I have 87 in my audio library and was disappointed with only a couple!

What does Christine Williams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

In my opinion, the narrator of any book is as important as the story. If you don't have a good narrator it will not bring the characters to life.

Any additional comments?

Jericho was the first book by Ann McMan that I had purchased. I bought it on the recommendation of Audible and listened to the short sample. I was not disappointed! I really enjoyed listening to this book. I liked the characters Maddie and Syd, and I loved the banter they shared. The author has a wonderful sense of humour! When I had finished this audio book I went on to Amazon to see if she had any other work. I was thrilled to see there was a sequel, ‘Aftermath’ which I immediately purchased. Again, I was not disappointed! I look forward to the 3rd book in the ‘Jericho’ series, ‘Patriarch’ I believe is out later this year!

Far too much "clever banter"

I quite enjoyed the first half of the book. Nice long build-up to a relationship in a genre that often sees the main characters leaping into bed and professing undying love after a few days. Unfortunately, the dialog between the two women or their friends (David/Michael) just got painful! Far too long, far too "fabulous", it just came off as contrived and boring. I started skipping forward 30 seconds at a time until the painful conversations were over. It was a struggle to finish for me, but reading other comments, I can see that some people liked it AND the infernal banter, so go figure.

I love this book so much.

This is the 3rd time I have listened to Jericho now. I have listened to the others in the series too.
Ann Mcman is able to create believable, likable and in depth characters that you can't help but get invested in. There is nothing bad I can say about these books. The more I listen the better they get. Christine Williams as a narrator really brings the stories to life and has such a wonderfully warm and expressive delivery. Perfection on every count. 👌
