Story
Meet Arthur and Ben. Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a show-stopping romance when you least expect it. Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things. But when the boys have a chance meeting at the post office, they leave wondering what exactly the universe does have in store for them.

The rules are simple: Help a human within one moon cycle and return to Pacifica to become an Elder—or fail and remain stuck on land forever. Crest is eager to get their Journey over and done with. Humans are disgusting. In Los Angeles with a human body and a new name, Crest meets Sean, a human lifeguard whose boyfriend has recently dumped him. I love him. And I’m pretty sure he loves me back...even though he’s straight. When I first met Carter King, I knew he was something special. I imagined us being together, and we are, but only as friends. Best friends! I’m trying to be cool with that, even though I know he has secrets, and there have definitely been mixed signals. I don’t want a crush to ruin what we already have. Then again, if there’s any chance that we can be together, it’s worth the risk, because Carter could be the love of my life. Or he might be the boy who breaks my heart.

Summary
From debut novelist Jason June comes a moving and hilarious sex-positive teen rom-com about the complexities of first loves, first hookups, and first heartbreaks - and how to stay true to yourself while embracing what you never saw coming, that’s perfect for fans of Sandhya Menon and Becky Albertalli.
There’s one thing Jay Collier knows for sure - he’s a statistical anomaly as the only out gay kid in his small rural Washington town. While all his friends can’t stop talking about their heterosexual hookups and relationships, Jay can only dream of his own firsts, compiling a romance to-do list of all the things he hopes to one day experience - his Gay Agenda.
Then, against all odds, Jay’s family moves to Seattle, and he starts his senior year at a new high school with a thriving LGBTQIA+ community. For the first time ever, Jay feels like he’s found where he truly belongs. But as Jay begins crossing items off his list, he’ll soon be torn between his heart and his hormones, his old friends and his new ones...because after all, life and love don’t always go according to plan.

Amazing!
Loved it from start to finish! The positive sex talk is amazing and it shows the struggles of peer pressure and sex. The side characters are so funny like Max but also have a backstory. They're not just there for comedic relief or more people in the story, they have a story of their own and I found myself really rooting for them. At some points, The Mc was slightly unlikeable but that was resolved by him actually realizing the mistakes he made. no one is perfect and I was in a similar situation to him, having moved out of my close minded, mean environment into something more open and immediately having accepted the first guy I met as a boyfriend just because finally someone actually showed interest in me, even though I didn't have real feelings for him and then hurting him in the process.
Finally nonhomophobic jocks! I loved that Max was so popular at the school. You see it way too often that the gay kid is the outsider when that's mostly not true! My friend (the only openly gay boy in our year) is the most popular guy in our year because of his personality and everyone is really protective of him. Any homophobe is scrutinized by everyone else. I think the community needs more of that because just as much as gay people are stereotyped in straight media, the "Jocks are the bullying and heartless homophobe" stereotype is shown way to often in queer media. So the positive representation here with Damien and Max is so great! No one even second-guesses their friendship or Max being a cheerleader for him, they just accept it which makes me so happy!
Additionally, outing not being the Main story arc! I really love that this could have been a straight story because it kind of normalized the LGBT community rather than making it about the outing which makes us different from the others.
The narrator's voice also fits this character so well! It's amazingly fitting!
The only thing I didn't like as much, was the lists. In the paperback novel, I didn't mind them. I liked them actually, because if they weren't there I would have kept going over to the first list to see what Jay is talking about. However in the audiobook you couldn't skim over it, which made it a but boring as the list usually was a minute long. I'll stick with 5 stars though because neither the authors, nor the narrator was at fault for that!
Overall, this goes onto my list of favs!!!!

good slice of modern gay US life
Ok basic story and important treatment of modern teen life in regional USA. Great for current teens or twenties reminiscing. Good for older people to see how things have changed. Trans and gender fluid, sex positive insights. Weak storyline and poor character development. An example of 'gay themed literature' relying on the topic and failing due to poor quality. Think A Maupin but much worse.

Jay is toxic AF lol
I enjoyed the story I DID but the main character was annoying me the whole time with his stupid decisions. I know he is young and was following what he was being taught but have a little common sense when someone on your life is that willing. I’m not trying to give anything away but yeah. Oh and the only thing that kind of annoyed me (no spoiler don’t worry) is him repeating that damn list of I heard that one more time I was gonna scream!

A good book, but....
Before you read too far, this was a really good reading of the book. I thought that the reader did a great job, and that overall it was a really interesting story. I did think that it was a poor portrayal of an LGBT youth growing up and figuring out what it means to be gay. It was an overly-sexualized, horny portrayal with a meaningful ending tacked onto the end. The no shame, but it left me feeling that they focused on the wrong aspects. Still a great book, and a great read, but if you don't want to listen to a high school senior rave about having their first time and being sexually charged, don't listen to this one.

Characters Blah!
So I try to support "coming out" stories as often as possible because they have an opportunity to set an example for so many people, younger and older, who may be struggling with the process. The notion that a small town country boy with limited gay options moving to the big city is huge because there are many living in those kinds of places where gay options don't exist. In this instance, I did not find a credible relationship or a person with whom I felt a connection or any empathy. Jay's best friend Lou, perhaps they had a warm and supporting friendship in the past, but Lou's attitude through the whole story seemed like Jay was on the hook for everything. Aside from being pitiful, she was one sided. She could do what she wanted with Chip but expects Jay to be dutifully by her side. Max, snotty Reece, the college boys, all of whom were arrogant and self absorbed. Albert may have been decent but was highly judgmental about the "lying by omission" concept. In this story, it is unfortunate that Jay fell into the lion's den and had to learn the hardest lessons really fast.

Beautifully Written, M. Sanderlin is Excellent!
Mark Sanderlin delivers a fantastic performance in this wonderful story! I can't wait to find out what else he has narrated.
Snarky, sassy, sweet and so full of soul, Jason June’s Jay’s Gay Agenda kept me smiling from the very start! I’m thoroughly impressed by the pace this talented author keeps up as Jay takes us along for the ride of a lifetime.
Growing up as the only out gay student in a very small town, Jay’s culture shock is understandable when he’s plunked down in sophisticated Seattle at the start of his Senior year in high school. In the process of crossing items off of his to-do list, Jay finds out that growing up has more to do with being human, than it does with how one identifies.
Issues like loyalty, understanding, honesty, and feeling wanted and accepted, are universal. And learning how to function in society has its challenges, no matter where you call home. We all can relate to some of the things Jay faces, and just watching Jay navigate his way through them is a pleasure.
A beautifully written, heartfelt story, I absolutely adored Jay’s Gay Agenda.

3 Stars for sure
Humorous, quirky, and sex positive.
Definitely a coming of age story that wrenches your heart as things spiral and get pulled together. Jay has spent so much of his life as the “gay kid” and now he’s in Seattle where the label doesn’t fit anymore, so what happens when he has to actually figure himself out? A messy journey.
Best Pro: Asian male love interest.
Worst Con: anal sex without any douching??? Ew

Should have been a tragedy
I won’t be giving anything away but in the beginning of the book Jay’s world is turned upside down. Throughout the book Jay makes many mistakes trying to get his barring on his new life. While doing so he made some wrong decisions. I actually really appreciated the fact that they showed him making those mistakes. However I would have liked to see more sever repercussions. Sometimes things don’t work out. Sometimes people don’t forgive you. You aren’t guaranteed a second chance. This book would have been so much better (in my opinion) if the character wasn’t able to repair what they damaged throughout the book. It would be a cautionary tale to young queer’s that your actions have consequences and in real life you can screw up so badly that you loose people because of it. Hence why I think this book would be better as a tragedy

Not great.
Most of this is written like its audience is preteen girls (“OMGEE”..“I can’t ‘FRACKING’ believe it!!!”) but then has random, out of place sexual comments (“it got me thinking about butt fucking”). I have no idea who the audience was supposed to be.
Also Jay kept reciting that damn list (his agenda). After hearing the list read for like 45th time I was done.

Great Listen - Highly Recommended
The narrator did an exceptionally fabulous job. A story with a perfect pace. A new author with a fantastic future.
