Summary

From a black, gay woman who broke into the boys' club of Silicon Valley comes an empowering guide to finding your voice, working your way into any room you want to be in and achieving your own dreams.

In 2015, Arlan Hamilton was on food stamps and sleeping on the floor of the San Francisco airport, with nothing but an old laptop and a dream of breaking into the venture capital business. She couldn't understand why people starting companies all looked the same (white and male) and she wanted the chance to invest in the ideas and people who didn't conform to this image of how a founder is supposed to look. Hamilton had no contacts or network in Silicon Valley, no background in finance - not even a college degree. What she did have was fierce determination and the will to succeed.

As much as we wish it weren't so, we still live in a world where being underrepresented often means being underestimated. But as someone who makes her living investing in high-potential founders who also happen to be female, LGBTQ, or people of colour, Hamilton understands that being undervalued simply means that a big upside exists. Because even if you have to work twice as hard to get to the starting line, she says, once you are on a level playing field, you will sprint ahead.

Despite what society would have you believe, Hamilton argues, a privileged background, an influential network and a fancy college degree are not prerequisites for success. Here she shares the hard-won wisdom she's picked up on her remarkable journey from food-stamp recipient to venture capitalist, with lessons like 'The Best Music Comes from the Worst Breakups', 'Let Someone Shorter Stand in Front of You', 'The Dangers of Hustle Porn', and 'Don't Let Anyone Drink Your Diet Coke'. Along the way, she inspires us all to defy other people's expectations and to become the role models we've been looking for.

Lovely to hear a different type of success story

Really liked this book. Arlan is an absolute trailblazer.

The short chapters make it good for bite sized consumption, but I was weary at listening to it in long chunks. There's something about it that makes it hard to keep attention, yet her story is interesting enough for you to come back

A masterclass in overcoming being underestimated

This book isn't just for people interested in Venture Capital. It's for anyone who has ever felt underestimated because they belong to a minority community. it is for anyone who has an idea for a business, struggles with imposter syndrome, or lacks the courage to take a leap of faith with something. If you find yourself within one of these groups, listen to this book and let Arlan's wise words fuel your ambition, you will not regret it!

Arlan. What. A. Woman.

Inspiring, packed full of value and so easy and enjoyable to listen to.

I’m not black, or queer, but as a woman this book blew my mind and was so relatable. Essential read/listen for all women everywhere! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Not only is the book well written and engaging, but Arlan Hamilton's story is testament to what can be achieved through hard work, a balanced outlook and belief in yourself. You don't have to be a budding entrepreneur to enjoy this book, it was an inspiring and interesting read.

An inspiring story that shows why representation matters

An inspiring story of grit and determination that provides a sneak peek behind the veil of the venture capital world.

You don’t have to have an interest in the world of high finance to get something from this book. All you need is a desire to pursue a dream. Arlan’s story will provide the fuel to kick you into motion.

A must read for anyone, but especially those who don’t see themselves in the fields they wish to pursue.

3.5 stars - limited appeal

This is a well written, well read and inspiring tale.
However, if you are not black/ethnic minority/descriminated against for sexuality or other reasons; if you are not from the US or interested in big businesses requiring investments, then this book will be of limited help to you.
I took away a couple (literally two) very small ideas from this but 99% of it did not apply to me.
I kept hoping for some advice which would help me in following my dreams but it is really only geared towards those with dreams (and obstacles) similar to those of the author.
